Hey ARFCOM, I'm looking for historical examples in which a country's people democratically elected a leader, entrusted him to expand the role of the country's federal government in hopes that it was for good, and then that leader turned it around and used such big government to establish an authoritarian/totalitarian state and proceeded to oppress the people. I specifically am looking for these examples to counter all the countless "we can use government for good" Liberals. Thank you |
None of those three were freely elected when they first took office. While both Castro and Tito later won "elections," none of those were even close to free elections. Pol Pot NEVER faced an election. |
Hitler wasn't technically elected to the position of Chancellor, which is what initially gave him power, and allowed him to start manipulating the system to get more power. His NSDAP party got a lot of votes, and the political leaders at the time (Hindenburg and one or two other dudes), thought that if they allowed him to be Chancellor, they might be able to control and moderate him. So it's not quite as simple as he was elected to a position of power. (If I remember history class correctly). |
