I was planning on waiting until next year to buy a new PC, but I have the opportunity to get a good deal on one now if I find it and order it before Christmas. Budget is around $1000. Computer will be used a lot for games, but I'm not the type of person that has to have the lastest $500+ video card. I usually keep a computer for about 5 years, during which time I will most likely replace the video card twice and upgrade RAM at least once. So having the latest, greatest card is not necessary. I don't need the best machine right out of the box, and would prefer spending my money on a good base that I can upgrade over the years. I haven't been shopping for computers in a while so I'm not up to date on the current hardware. What is the best processor for the money? I've always had Intels in the past, never AMD, but willing to try it out. What's the deal with these 'dual processors'? What processor speed should I be looking for in this price range? What else do I need to look for in the new processors? RAM, what type is everyone getting these days? I plan on buying a brand I'm familiar with (no small manufacturers or BYO deals). I've had good experience with Gateway and Dell in the past, so those are the two I mainly looking at. Which one of the two is building better machines for the $$$ right now? What other manufacturers should I be considering? What else should I look for in a decent gaming machine? Thanks in advance. |

| Yeah, Newegg is a great place to get parts. Good prices, fast shipping. In the war between AMD and Intel, as far as gaming goes, AMD was ahead for a while with the best processors for gaming with their 64fx line. But Intel has moved ahead again recently with their Core 2 Duo processors. Those processors are monsters and will be a great base to start off with. |
