My 8 year old briggs / craftsman won't run, probably needs a carb rebuild or jets cleaned.

the deck is a husquevarna, but the motor is an "intek" and it never made a lot of power, even though it's rated at 7hp

I think maybe I'll get a new one.

$500 budget I think.

thanks for any help.

Honda mowers are supposed to be pretty good.  I think they're a little higher than $500 though.

I have a Honda HR214 that was purchased for me to mow my Grandma's yard brand new in 1982.

I would estimate that it has well over 4000 hours of use on it.

It smokes a bit now when it is first started, but still runs and cuts great.  Can't beat a Honda.

Pay a neighborhood kid $20.  He can mow your lawn 25 times at your budget.

...which would be like buying more than one new mower every year.

Or he can get another 8 years out of his next mower.  25 mowings is about 2 years for me.

That being said, $20 is a pretty good price for a mow.

ETA:

I am quite happy with my  Troy Bilt TB350 XP.  It was the first mower that I know of that has rear wheel drive and the larger rear wheels.  It was a new model in 2011 and this is my second season using it.  I paid an extra $60 to get the extended plan for 3 years.  I'll make sure somehting breaks on it before that plan expires

You mow 25 times a year?  That's every two weeks for the entire year.  I doubt it.  I bet we mow half that here in the Dallas area.

I walked into Home Depot last Sunday and bought the Honda 21" self propelled steel deck mower...wanted the composite deck but not for the money.
Paid $400.
I used it once and it appearded to cut my grass...the cheaper MTD/Yardmachines were only about $150 less so this decision was easy.

ETA: if I had a smaller yard I would go electric corded.

Not sure why I laughed at that, but I did. Maybe it was the "appearded" part.

And yes, Honda rarely lets people down. The OP needs to click your link and check the feedback numbers: 400 people have left reviews and it has an average of 4.5 stars out of five. Most people who leave feedback do so to bitch about a product, not praise it. That really says something to me.

I would love to get a Honda self-propelled lawn mower ( I got steep parts in my property).  Alas!  the one I want is $ 599 from Homedepot.  Its the HRX21 7VKA. I have a 7 year-old B&S on a 21 inch Craftsman deck.  I do regular change oil, air filter  and sparkplug changes.  It keeps running.  I also make sure cutting blade is sharp.  Oh well, if I could squeeze a few more years from it I would say it had paid for itself.  I have to admit I love love to have the Honda.

Can anyone tell me what brand of mower has the most power for going through tall grass?  Honda's might last a long time (so did my cheap Walmart mower) but they biggest engine I've seen on a Honda is 160cc.  I've seen 190cc engines on other mowers.  Then you have torque rating.  Right now I have a Craftsman with the 7.5 torque rating.  It clogs up and dies if I'm trying to mulch 2" of grass.  It is the biggest POS I have ever owned.  John Deere makes one with an 8.75 torque rating but it has the same 190cc engine the 7.5 engines have.

Basic question is what brand of self propelled mower can mulch 4 inches of grass and not choke?

I've mowed 5 times already this year and I am in NY.  25 times a year is nothing up here unless it is bone dry and our season is only 7-8 months.

Good idea, but out of his budget.

OP, you called the mower a briggs/craftsman but said the motor was something other than a briggs.  I've got a Craftsman with a briggs and Stratten engine on it.  It's 12 years old and going strong.  Unless you REALLY want a new mower, drain the gas and clean out the carburator, change the spark plug, and see what happens.

Used Honda. I got mine by trading an old Murray and $75. It was a steal.

An "Intek" is a Briggs & Stratton engine, V-twin.

I have a Briggs I/C opposed twin 18.5hp.  Mount that on a push mower and it should mulch 4" of grass.....

Obviously that's a huge factor in the decision.

The last Honda I had lasted over 20 years.  I don't know what I have now.  My 16 yo son mows so I don't really care.  Normally he'll start mowing right about now.  Maybe two or three times until June.  Then everything that doesn't catch on fire just dies until around November.  Maybe a few times in the late fall.

My Honda cuts through the tall stuff just fine.  In fact, it does it much better than my Troy Bilt that had a larger engine.  The Twin Blades on the Honda eats through anything, and I like the ability to adjust how much is mulched vs. bagged.  I have this model:

I have a small lawn business (6-8 accounts) and have been using this mower for 3 years with no problems.  You could get one of the models without the Nexite deck and save some money.

Could you attach one of those wheeled platforms to ride on like the commercial guys use? If so, that would be a GREAT set up.

I will take a look at that mower.  I have a small lawn business on the side and mow about that many yards as well.  The Craftsman just seemed to be a poor design by the bagging area.  When not bagging it would jam grass in that area until no more would fit, then large clumps of packed grass would fall out killing the motor.

Home Depot will sell refurbished "like new" Hondas at time. That's what I bought a few years ago and it has been great. HALF the price of a new one and with a factory warranty. Can't beat that.

Our climate is subtropical and rainy, humid.  Grass grows like crazy, you're mowing 2x per week in the summer sometimes unless you want dried trimming clumps everywhere.

Looks like I'm going to get the $600 honda, thanks guys.
