Starting to plan my first major relocation since graduating from school and getting married.  All previous moves could be handled by small Uhaul and couple trips with a pickup truck.  But I have acquired alot more stuff since then and now I'm starting to see this upcoming move as rather daunting task.  Especially since my stuff will have to stay in storage for a couple months or longer while the family and I search for a suitable house in the Austin area.

So, o'wise and sage arfcom elders.  Even if you can only answer one question, that's one less thing I gotta figure out.  What is some good advice on how to tackle such tasks as...

Gunsafe - sucker is full, heavy and not something that a simple appliance dolly can move.  Can significantly lighten it by removing guns, but not enough lockable cases to store them in

Big Flat Screen TV - 55" of HD goodness, don't have the original packaging (kicking self like crazy) and no clue how to keep secure and safe during a move.

Refrigerator/Freezer -  How long before the move date do I need to defrost and empty them so they are stored with NO water inside them and possibly get moldy?

Garage stuff:

Tools - heavy, bulky, odd shaped.  What's the key on moving this stuff? Current place has built in cabinets in the garage.  New place will likely not.

Lawn mower, edger, leaf blower - drain gas, spray clean with garden hoes, then what? Toss in back of Uhaul?

BBQ Pit/Grill - Clean with pressure washer and just load it up?

Storage Questions:

So having never put stuff in storage before.  What's something to watch out for? I'm mostly worried about dust and musty smells getting into my clothes, bedding, or new couch.  Is this a concern with a climate controlled unit?  Was going to get a climate controlled one anyway out of concerns for electronics and family pictures.

How do you determine how many square feet of storage you need?  I've got a 3 bedroom home and decent sized garage of stuff?

sure I'll think of more later, but these are the ones jumping right out at me

Personally, I'd go with PODS or something equivalent.

They drop a container off at  your house, you fill on your schedule, they come pick it up, move it to your new location and store it in a climate controlled warehouse.  Strangers never have access to your stuff (without breaking locks) plus they never see what you put in there.

You may hire someone to load it up at the old location, but they won't have access to it since it will be out of town wherever you send it.

What I plan to do when I have to move is buy a 20 foot container, fill it up then have someone pick it up and move it to the new place.

Good luck.

With the amount of things you have here is my advise.  Hire a company to move your stuff.  Is it worth it to possibly hurt your back moving a fridge?  Pack up the things you can and let them put it in storage and forward it to your new location.

Now I did this twice...outcome is some of your shit is going to get dinged up. U pack up all of your shit yourself. I did most of this as a young man. Lifting and toting a 300 lb leather sofa ain't easy by yourself up and down inclines. Now I am in the logistics business so I understand how to build pallets and had all the shrinkwrap, tape guns, and boxes, how to build walls for stability, etc.... Most folks don't.

It isn't necessarily any cheaper than hiring someone since the recession. Lots of guys are on the sidelines looking to move anyone. I would suggest this. This is how we moved last time on the corp dime. It was about $1500 MORE, but I only had to box our own stuff up.

Costco has Boxes, tape, etc.... for $100.00
