I was a Paramedic for twelve years, ending my career with a horrendous knee injury while Ski-Patrolling. I really loved the streets. Now, it seems that I have an opportunity to get back on the streets and I wanted to know what the Paramedics here think of the idea. I will be 35 next week, my knees are healed after 6 surgeries. I am stronger and more mature than I was 12 years ago. Your advice is appreciated. |

Wiggy: Since no one else has posted, I'll give you a little IMHO. First I'm not a Para, but I figure if you can pass the physical you should be in the running. The only mitigating factor would be your age, I'm not trying to flame here, but most departments have an age cut off that may make you ineligible. Lets face it, if I were to try to qualify now for the job I have been doing for 18 years, I WOULD NOT QUALIFY! I admire your dedication and tenacity, but anymore that is not enough. From the bottom of my heart I say good luck Bro. Rootin for ya, GS808 |

Most cut off ages around here (Texas) is "not to have reached your 36th birthday." Many others will let you work past that. It depends on what type of system, if any, is in place. You have many years of service left. Go get em. I have been in it for 25 years now, since I was 20 years old. I've ruined back, knees, and one shoulder. I wouldn't do anything else. Let me know if I can help. Glen. |

Thanks for all of the replies! It looks like I get to be in the same Paramedic class as my son! This is gonna rock. I will get the licensure regardless of the opportunities for full time employment. I will be able to PRN or part-time and I want/need to get the license back. Thanks again for all of the replies. You guys rock. |
