Mods,
This may not be the correct forum but here goes anyway.

Neighbor panic buys (this week) a Bushmaster A2 complete AR with 20" barrel.  Calls me on the phone telling me that it feels heavier than what he remembers using in the Corps.  I meet up with him later to look at it and this is what we find under the hand guards:

I can see the barrel inside of this contraption and there is even a channel cut into the top of it so the gas tube can remain in it's same configuration.  There is not a barrel nut on the gun and the delta ring is only held in place by the hand guards.  Those are threads in front of the thicker piece which leads me to believe it is acting as some type of barrel nut.  Any idea what this is and what purpose it serves?

That's the attachment for the mount to use the rifle as an anti-aircraft battery.

My first thought was that Bubba the Gun-Plumber had installed some new creation of his, but after looking at it, I'm not so sure.  What ever it is took a lot of time to machine.

Maybe its a sleeve to free float the barrel and still use factory handguards for service matches? Hell...IDK

My guess is a sleeve to free float the barrel with stock handguards.

A quick search showed Bushmaster has 87 barrel configurations. No seriously.

It's a CMP/NRA Hightower legal float tube.

And yes, it adds weight and he will probably want a but stock weight as well in order to have it balance better.
