I want to have new carpet put in a few places at my house and i have never had it done before.

I have been looking at home depot and lowes but i am not sure if they are good places to go or not, i am not sure about what pricing is good and what is a rip off.

Can any of you guys give me some advice about having the carpet installed and where would be a good place to look?

I'm fixin' to rip out the carpet in my livingroom and intall laminate flooring. Easy to do, more durable and easier to clean than carpet, and cheaper. I have a couple nice area rugs already.
ETA: I already have laminate in my kitchen and dining room...I get a kick out of watching my dog try and run on it.

Are you talking about that floating hardwood stuff that you just snap together?

Yes he is and it's what I put in last year.  I freaking love it.  Doesn't look too cheap and it's almost as durable as tile.  I've had 4 dogs scrambling across it (20-105lbs) for months now and it still looks new.

I am kind of toying with that idea, i have put that stuff in before but i dont have any idea bout pricing as i was installing it for my sister. It turned out good and was very easy to do.

Where did you get yours from? i think i probably have around 600-800 SQ feet to do.

Add me to the list of people who despise carpet. We already had extended tile in our new house (it was bought as a spec), and the "upgraded" carpet had lost a significant amount of resiliency in just one year. We ripped all the carpet out of the office, library, living room and halls and replaced it with laminate. We will likely have the carpet torn out and replaced with laminates in all the bedrooms, too, if I can get the little lady talked into. She has it in her head that the bedrooms need to stay carpet. If we roll that route, I'm having something in a medium color with several fiber colors put in.

As for Lowe's and Home Depot, they're eh on prices. You can do way better with a local flooring outlet. They can actually be bargained with where the big box guys will tell you to get bent if you start trying to haggle with them.

Home Depot.  Got some closeout stuff for .99 a square foot.  Did my whole house.

This.

I have carpeet upstairs and I am saving money so I can rip it out and put in hardwood floors. Great in the summer. In the winter we use throw rugs to keep things more comfy.
Downstairs we have ceramic tile. Here on the beach rugs get ruined very fast by all the sand.

That's da stuff. Do some research online and you will see that there are different grades, thicknesses, and myriad finishes. I have opted to buy the better stuff. My way of thinking...the thicker it is, the less it's gonna 'float' and feel fake to walk on. Warranty is also a consideration.

Some of the bamboo stuff out there is very cool stuff.  Try here:  http://flooring.builddirect.com/Laminate-Flooring.aspx

The last time I bought carpet I bought it from the mill outlet in Dalton GA.
