I don't understand
Are you using a separate monitor? What are you trying to do connecting it to the Internet?? The laptop should have a key combo for presentation mode which duplicates the display on the external monitor and laptop screen. Probably a special Function button and a number key |

Go into BIOS/CMOS. Usually you have to hit one of the "F1-12" keys or "DEL"
From there look for a setting that allows you to pic which display to initialize first or as primary. Theres no step by step because it varies by laptop if it has such a setting at all. If you provide brand, model someone may be able to provide that information. May also be possible to set this via display prefs in windows. -Foxxz ETA - there is also usually an Fn key that you hold down while pressing another key that has a picture of a monitor on it. Thats not always permanent and you may have to hit it on every reboot or power on. |

On most Dells this is FN+F8. -Mark |

You can't do that, view her laptop on your screen if that's what you are asking. Certainly not without the right equipment and devices.
You'll need an external monitor, like not your laptop screen. Hook it up, turn it and the laptop on, and just hit FN+F8 or whatever it is to duplicate the displays. If you just have your notebook and her notebook, you aren't going to be able to get anywhere, sorry. |

I'm still confused mang :(
What are you trying to do with the network cable? The only thing you need is her laptop, an external monitor, a power cord, and a monitor cable. Hook up monitor to laptop Turn on monitor Turn on laptop Hit FN+F8 (there should be a key on the keyboard that says "LCD/CRT" or a little monitor icon, that's it) That should be it. You may have to hit the combo a few times (wait a few seconds between changes, it takes a sec for it to change). |

ETA: i know mechanical things and quite a few electronic things. computers are not really a part of that. |

for anyone confused, he was going to try and hit it over the network cable with a remote control program: RDP, VNC, etc.
thing is, that won't change the default display settings. the two ways in the thread mentioned (BIOS, fn+F key) will work. Dell's screens vary in price, depending on size and age. See if there is a Dell Authorized Service Center around (call the Mom+Pops) and price a screen. Could be $50, could be $200. Expect at least an hour labor. |

Would never have worked unfortunately. You'd need to know several things using her laptop (assigned address, etc.) to even start. Good thing you had a monitor |
