[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Nefilim (Page 1 of 2)

Was at lunch yesterday and heard a guy talking about the "Nefilim" and their existence explained everything we don't understand about the world.

Could this have been a table trolling the restaurant or does anybody out there believe this?  I did a brief googling and it seems there are alot of references.

Gene5's moon base thread got me thinking about weird shit so here I am asking.

Anybody out there believe this stuff?

They're mentioned in the book of Genesis and in the non-canonized book of Enoch.

Genesis chapter 6, vs 1-7
http://biblehub.com/genesis/6-1.htm

Book of Enoch, look at chapters 6-11. I didn't see the word Nephilim, but those two references are talking about the same time frame and events, some Bible versions say "nephilim" some don't.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/index.htm

Summary; wicked angels came "down" (I assuming this is after the division of the angels and demons, but demons still being called angels, or it was yet another group that decided to defect) and had sex with humans and they gave birth to giants. Meanwhile the "angels" began to teach men about various roots, metals, precious stones, incantations and causing general sinful distractions away from devotion to God.

That's what the guy was saying.  Said it was in the bible and in the oldest scrolls found.  Said it explains all the crazy stuff built thousands of years ago.

Guy sounded like he was selling amway.

When I first read into the topic, I found it quite interesting, and discussed it with my wife, who also found it interesting. However, even though I believe the events took place, I don't think about it much since it's not something to be overly enamored with or spend too much time wondering about. I'd certainly never try to "sell" it to someone, since it too can become a distraction away from God and what He's done for us, despite the brokenness of the world and people. I'm guessing that is one of the reasons the book of Enoch wasn't included in the Bible, but at least gets an short blip in Genesis.

it's a fairly common idea, as those things go.  ties in with the theosophical movement, atlantis stuff, pyramidiocy, and ecumenical unification (like the "grand unifying theory", only about the pantheon instead of physics).

basically, it's a variation of the prometheus myth--the nephilim introduced certain heavenly mysteries to humans--stuff like math.

Someone wrote a fictional book about soldiers in Astan running into Nephilim.

I haven't read it, but it could be good.

The idea of giants interested me for a bit because there are other historical accounts of them besides the bible. The facts are probably in the same file as dragons.

However, I did read a fairly enjoyable series of books about the nephilim and Antarctica. Don't remember the titles. They were kind of fun, even if they got a little preachy.

Nephilim had nothing to do with Atlantis. That's crazy conspiracy nonsense. Atlanteans were just clever folk living in an insanely resource-rich part of the world. Besides, the Nephalim were destroyed in the flood, long before Atlantis rose to power.

Though, having said that, there are schools of thought that Goliath (of David and Goliath fame) had Nephilim blood in him.

Dragons are widely misrepresented, actually combining two different things: a handful of dinosaurs that existed contemporaneously with early men, and large flying lizards that were able to expel flammable gases from digestion and ignite them using electrical "glands" of some kind in their throat - similar to electric eels.

Hazy tribal memory and an oral tradition resulted in the two different things getting conflated and retold as "dragons". It's taken quite a bit of research to separate the two back out again.

I've seen "pictures" and claims but no solid evidence of those skeletons.

It could very well be that there was a group of genetically, abnormally large people (say 7 feet tall) and when encountered by average sized people (5 feet) they would be giants. And we all know how stories and legends get exaggerated over time.

Seems more plausible than angels fucking human women.

I once wasted 2 days reading websites and watching videos of this stuff.  It is fascinating, but there is no proof of any of it that I could see.  I believe most of the photos, if not all, are fakes.  The Native American tales of war with the red head giants was very interesting as well. Mix that with some of the tales of bigfoot tribal wars and you've got an entertaining weekend.

You might be surprised. Mammoth populations were still around as recently at 1600-1700 BC; living populations of Coalacanth were discovered less than 80 years ago, despite being believed extinct since the Cretaceous period; legends have spoken enough about cryptids matching what we might now identify as a dinosaur - the Loch Ness Monster being a great example - that it would seem foolish to discount them.
