I haven't used the Solarwinds package.
I am currently implementing Zenoss Core in my lab, though not yet with near the number of hosts you mention. So far I am liking it. Mostly web-based admin, runs on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, or Mac OS X.

Solarwinds works, at least our networking guys like it. They also use NetQos.

We use www.zenoss.org to manage many thousand switches. I would look there if I was you.
