Hey Arf Nerds -   I just moved into a house that I had wired with CAT5E.  All the cables end up in the basement.  Can I just plug them all into a big router and set the network up?  Also, if my cable modem/router is plugged into one of the wall jacks that feeds to the router, will all the wall jacks have internet access?  Thanks.

A switch would be a better choice.  Plug all of your computers into the switch, and then plug your router into the switch.

Yup, one of these http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-GS108NA-ProSafe-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00006RVPW/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1382473764&sr=1-7&keywords=switch

Unless your modem is also a router.....you will need a router. A switch is not going to pass out IP addresses too all your connected devices, nor will it provide wireless to your house, not to mention you need a router to act as a rudimentary firewall at least. Modem into router, into switch would be the best case scenario. If the house is large enough a couple of access points as well.

Yes the modem is a router/modem combo.  I will order the switch, plug everything in and then return here with more questions

How many ports do you need?  Do you need any management?

Went with the 16 port version of the switch you guys recommended.  Everything works great.  I just ordered a 4 port POE switch to run a few IP cameras.  You can plug a switch into a switch right?

Okay good, because the modem/router unit is upstairs one level from the main wiring panel, and I only have one cable run to where the router is.  If I ran an additional cable I could have a dedicated cable from each switch plugged into a separate jack in the modem/router, but if I don't need to I won't.
