| Anyone have experience using it to grow muscle? If so, how well did it work? Any negatives? |
| It stimulates a muscle contraction without nervous system input which is not how are muscles are normally stimulated. A large portion of strength is due to the nervous system's activation of muscles. Usefull in rehab situations to certain degrees, not going to tone your abs while you sit on the couch |

I used one for a couple months before during, and after both of my ACL surgeries. I was a student during the time, so I was able to sit and study for 4-8 hours/day which the stim was on it... They didnt build muscle, but it did feel good... and in research has been shown to help preserve the actual coordination between brain and muscle... but build muscle while you sit at the office chair?... yeah... lemme know how that works. |

No, not those ab-belt gadgets marketed on late night infomercials.
I saw it mentioned here > > > www.uiowa.edu/be-remarkable/portfolio/people/wahls-t.html "Wahls attributes her progress to two treatments: the nutrient-rich diet she developed, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation, which uses an electrical current to promote muscle growth." |

SO it would appear she's using it as a type of physical therapy, and the term "muscle growth" here doesn't really mean growth like what we would think. You want to grow muscle? Eat and lift. Period.

I had a TENS unit that worked great for my arm rehab the third time around and it made life so much easier. I didn't have to start back a zero. Usefull for rehab for sure. A little more detail, please. How is it useful for rehab? What does it do for the muscles: Increase strength? Size? Or what? Did the TENS unit put out enough current to cause pain? |
|
commercial tens units are generally pretty weak. 'RX' ones, or ones that can pump up the Miliamps, can cause pain... especially if you have no idea where you should put the electrodes... tens units are good to keep muscles 'in the loop' as far as contracting. They don't build size, stamina, or anythign else. It just makes your muscles more apt to follow your direction when you say fire. |

I have a RX tens unit. It's good for pain and keeping the muscles from atrophy. It will cause pain if you turn it up to high or misplacement of pads. Iv been using mine for around three years now for the pain management. It will not grow any muscle or increase strength no matter what any body says. |

2-time Hawaii Ironman champ Chris McCormack uses EMS for recovery.

I had a prescription TENS unit that worked my abs really well when a buddy of mine put it on his face and another put it on his bicep on the highest setting. I laughed until my abs cramped. The one that put it on his face did this squinting Joker smile that was hilarious. The other one almost punched himself in the mouth then freaked out and couldn't get it turned off. |
