Yesterday I had a big brew. Most expensive of my history. I elected to use rice hulls I help ensure the mash doesn’t get stuck. I ended up pulling my mash pump head apart several times to clear rice hulls from it. On top of that, I had to back flush the pump 3-4 more times to clear it. Every time I stirred my mash it caused problems. I run an electric HERMs system. I survived for the first 15 years without Rice hulls. I guess I’ll survive the rest of my brewing career without them. Rant over. Back to enjoying beer.

I've been running two Chuggers on my system for over 10 years. I've never had one jam during a brew session. I am using the stainless steel center inlet versions. I've run them with and without rice hulls. I've found that without rice hauls, I have to throttle the pump back or it will completely compact the grain bed. To the point where, I can see it drawing a vacuum which could damage my false bottom. I now run 1 to 2 pounds of rice hulls depending on the size of the batch. |
