NE not even close

Aside from the fact that im lactose intolerant. More often than not New England is made really sub standard and is more like thick glop in a cup. So I dont even bother rolling the dice on ordering it anymore.

We make bolth at home but I like manhatten much more.

Fresh ground black pepper only, optional on the oyster crackers.

My folks are old school yankee.  The only way to go is home made New England style.  If you show up asking for Manhattan style east of New Haven, ya might get your face cut.

[#20]
New England
7/29/2010 12:11:46 PM EDT
[#21]
Surely you're joking.

New England style is the only way to make clam chowder.  Manthattan is not chowder.  It's tomato-clam soup.  That, and it's gross.

NECC FTW

The only way to make it better is to drop it into a sourdough bread bowl and put it next to an Anchor Steam.  That's one of the few things San Francisco gets right.

New England, but I haven't had a bowl of either in years.
7/29/2010 12:15:41 PM EDT
[#25]
Now you need to do a poll about the thick vs watery NE varieties.
7/29/2010 12:26:04 PM EDT

New England with OTC crackers and real bacon bits on top.

New England is delicious, Manhattan is foul.

NE is the only chowder.
7/29/2010 12:36:36 PM EDT

I prefer Manhatten but I'll eat the hell out of both.

New England with plenty of black pepper.

"What's the password?"

"New England clam chowder."

"Is that the red or the white?"

"Ah, I can remember that. White?!"
7/29/2010 12:50:35 PM EDT
[#33]
There is only one kind.

Clam chowder is white and crab soup is red.
Keep it straight and there will be no trouble.

I had Carolina Clam Chowder once and it was sort of like chicken soup, but with clam instead of chicken.  Wasn't bad, but wasn't quite what I'd been used to.

Boston Clam chowder made with rendered fatback, brings back some fond memories..

Durgin Park Restaurant North Market building, now that was chowder.

You win.

Real New England Chowdah has small, crisp chunks of fat back that add a different dimension to an otherwise bland dish.

I've never seen it outside of my small hometown of Friendship, Maine.

Kudos to you sir.

Being a Mainer, does one really have to ask.

Looks like this WON'T be the new beans/no beans food thread, judging off of the results of the poll thus far.

I'm embarassed to admit Manhattan. But I declare lactose intolerance as my defense!

Ever notice how the correct answer is almost always in the middle of the poll?  It's like the poll is giving the finger to all the people who answer wrong.

Manhattan isn't bad from time to time, but New England is always good.

I like 'em both...manhattan style is good anytime,New England is hardier and great in the wintertime.

Had an excellent chowdah in Ogunquit Maine last weekend....... their crab cake sucked but the steamers (not what you are thinking) and the chowdah were excellent.
