Dante Von Draggahaus

Just got him home a few hours ago. He's zonked out now in the crate after a long ride home, an hour of chasing me around the backyard and barking at my room mate's cat.

Congrats on the new friend.

If you are in school/college (I saw roommate) please make sure you can financially and emotionally care for him.  When he does something wrong, please don't dump him off on someone else.

Sorry man, I'll get off my soapbox, but I "inherited" several strays while finishing my undergrad when sophmores decided they didn't want to take care of their dog/cat anymore.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone.

Not in school - I work full time and make a good living with a secure job for my age (24). I live less than a mile from work in a house with a couple friends (makes rent and bills easier) which means I can take an hour to come home for some training and potty/food breaks during work days. I took the next 7 days off work so he can acclimate himself to my schedule and his new surroundings. I am not giving him away. It took me months to find a good local breeder and he came from one hell of a litter (11 pups!). My breeder interviewed me and I had to fill out a contract/questionnaire before she would agree to sell me a dog. That's the kind of breeder I want and will pay for gladly.

I'd like to do agility/tracking with him when he gets a bit older but we will see. For now I'm going to enroll in a couple obedience classes and socialize him every chance I get.

If he does anything wrong it's not his fault - it's my fault.

I will update periodically with pictures - my mom is more excited about him than I am it seems. I think she's tryin' to tell me something.

Be sure to keep the end of his Tail hair trimmed, cut as close to him without cutting him.

GSD"s naturally when/if their tail drags will hook it to keep it off the ground, this will prevent that.

ETA: nothing uglier than a whip/hook tail on a GSD.

Good job.  If more dog owners were like you, there would be a lot less problem dogs.

Good lookin' pup.

Just a quick update...

He is finally getting settled in after being away from his litter mates and mom. He is for the most part crate trained, and will 9 times out of 10 go into his crate when I give the command to "kennel up", only crying if I leave his sight for more than 5-10 minutes.

He has "sit", "nein", and "here" down pat. I'm working on "down", "leave it", and "sit pretty".  I got him up to the vet on Wed. and he was given a clean bill of health with the exception of ringworms in his stool, which is common in puppies and being treated. Overall he is extremely well behaved, good around other animals and a variety of people in a variety of places. He loves exploring and doesn't seem to be afraid of anything. Here are a few newer pics of him. (the vet taped up his ear using it as added weight because it has a tendency to lean inward over his head)

Also if anyone has any recommendations for flea/tick prevention since summer is coming around it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all the compliments!

"Why are you making funny noises to get my attention?"

"Again with the funny noises?"

"That rain earlier sure made it easier to get dirty!"

Take that tape off, totally normal for a GSD pup at that age.

ETA: If by a slim chance his Ears don't errect correctly no tape will help, it would be considered a fault and no repeat breeding of the parents.

Ringworm is a skin fungus that causes circular hair loss. I am guessing you probably meant roundworms!

Oops, yes I meant roundworms

I took the tape off as suggested. The vet had told me it wasn't an issue yet, but to get him used to the tape so later on when he is older use it as the cartilage in his ear strengthens. He said it formed that way while in the womb pressed up against another pup or the moms belly. I have read not to pet back on the ears and have avoided doing so and only petting on the top of his head and at the base of his ears and neck.

Thanks again for the kind words, everyone!

For the ears, very gently massage them base to tip several times a day.

Unless one of his parents had bad ears, don't worry.

Any breeder worth their salt would not knowingly breed if they produced bad ears.
Be sure to keep updating with pics.

ETA: Don't freakout when the Ears do come up and they go back down. When they teeth they tend to go back down, some go a little , all the way, one ear, then the other, etc.
