So I went out and bought an ATI X1300 pro to replace the ATI 8500LE on an old computer of mine. Installation and everything went ok, booted up, played some HL2 dm to try her out. I really couldn't tell the difference between the old and the new, so I turn up some settings and go to the command console to show some fps. To my suprise the new card frequently dipped into the red, 20-30 range. Added to that webpages and everything seemed to load slower. Also when I would play videos there was a delay when starting where there was no delay before. So I throw the old 8500, replace the drivers, and try some HL2 deathmatch again, same settings throughout, same level and all. To my suprise I found that the 8500 was actually outperforming the new x1300 pro. rarely dipped in the red on the fps. So I'm wondering, WTF???, I am back to the 8500, it runs faster in every aspect. All drivers and software for both cards were current and nothing else in the system changed, could the new x1300 actually slow my computer down??? Would a 9800 pro chipset be better? The pc is old but still limping along. Mainly as a media server but I want the ability to have several ppl play HL2 at my house. So, anyway, it's back to circuitcity tonight with the X1300, and I know, newegg has them cheaper but I knew a situation like this might occur, and CC is only 6 miles away... Any help/suggestions would be appreciated |
| now, I'm gonna assume this is PCI-E and not AGP? Could very well be because the Pro line is bellow the LE line, with XT being the top. My buddy just got an X1300XT and he runs Oblivian maxed on the settings and has no troubles, could be that your mobo just isn't keeping up. |

ATI = Awesome hardware, but their drivers SUCK. nVidia = Awesome drivers, but their hardware isn't as good. I've had 3 differen't ATI cards in this computer alone and the drivers just won't agree with my computer. I have a 9800Pro 256mb right now and I'm about to trade it up for an nVidia card. |
It is in fact AGP, the pc is 4 yrs old, P4 2.4ghz, 1mb DDR, currently running the ATI 8500LE. As I open web pages I can tell a substantial difference, the 8500 you click and it's there, with the x1300 pro it would take longer, like the AR15 home page, as if loading the pics was slowing it down. I know it sounds ridiculous but I can assure you it was running slower. Maybe the x1300 adapted to AGP is just junk.... ETA: The 8500LE has 128mb, the x1300 pro has 256mb, both are actual ATI manufactured cards. I checked ATI's website for up to date drivers for the 1300. |
checked, reset aperature in the bios twice just to make sure, I've already got the x1300 back in the box, I think I'm just gonna stick with the 8500 and maybe reduce quality if I'm having problems Thanks for the info |
I think I'll just have to get my money back at circuit city, the x1300 was actually the nicest ATI card they had on the shelf, sad isn't it. I'll watch newegg for a deal, thanks again for the help |

For an older comp with AGP, here is the card you want for the price ($119): shop.ati.com/searchresults.asp?dept_id=39 Radeon® X800 XL AGP 256MB D/V/VIVO Whitebox - REFURB* + Standard Warranty FAST AGP card (bout fastest you can get on AGP, will blow that 8500se into the dirt). Yes its a refurb, but its a straight from factory refurb WITH warranty. It is also faster than the x850pro since it has 12 pipelines, versus the X850 pro's 8. |
it could be your CPU isnt allowing the card to run at its max. i got a x700 pro and it ran bf2 at all min settings at around 50 fps on my AMD xp2400, got a new mobo and cpu AMD 64 3500 and now i can run bf2 at high settings at around 50-70 fps. |
never ever buy anything from circuit city.....they are ungodly overpriced to anything a little shopping around will get you....even their website usually offers prices cheaper then in the store (if buying online). Like this laser mouse I just bought. CC wanted $70 + tax for it.......I bought it from amazon.com marketplace for $34 + shipping (under $5). |
| Windows does not like Video card changes. Having said that, try uninstalling the old video card and immediately after the uninstall, shut down the compter and install the new video card. Then get the latest and greatest drivers for it and install those. Reboot after the install. If this does not work, then the next thing is to back up your data, wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows. A newer card should never perform worse than an older card. |
That's your problem. Upgrade that motherboard and CPU! |
yeah seriously, you need more hardware. |
I do have xp SP2 |
I know, It's not my main machine, read Post #1 |
