asus loads extra software from the factory?

why not just go through add/remove programs and remove the programs you won't use

Buy the FULL version, reformat drive and install.

It's mainly the startup that seems slow

There really does not seem to be a lot of extra BS from the factory. I guess I am looking for some tweaks to help the SU

vista does boot slow,   but it will run for months without having to be restarted

Uh....okay.

To the OP:  MSconfig is a good start, as well as add/remove programs.  You should be an admin, so you can also get into the registry and look at the Run and Run Once settings.  If you don't know where those are at in the registry...well, you probably shouldn't mess with the registry!

Just let Vista do it's thing for a while. I will speed up as it learns your usage habits.

I would also check your firewall for exceptions that need to be shut down. As for the performance, it is correct that MSConfig is the place to start shutting down bootup crap. Also check your startup folder. Finally, you might get better luck with simply buying more RAM. Vista is a real RAM Whore.

Yes, I do.  My D630 at work is actually faster to boot with Vista compared to XP, but I have to reboot it a couple times a week due to excessive memory leaks, the occasional blue screen, and unexplained CPU usage.  And that is on my personal PC, after I have stripped it down to be as clean and efficient as I can per corporate specs.  You should see some of our test desktops that we are developing the corporate image on.  Wowzers, is it unstable!  I am really dreading when we start rolling out Vista to the end users....
