White smoke....joy in popeland

Don't know about everyone else, but to me its refreshing that in this day of instant news, calling elections before they are counted, and inside sources, the news agencies cannot name the new pope until the Vatican does.....It's just nice to know that there are still sacred things in this world that are still being protected....

CNN.com and Fox both say black.  Looks like there's still a few hours of news.

Looks like the .com side was just slow to update.

I think doing it in so short of voting sessions speaks for the unity and certainty of the Catholic church in their choice for Pope.

AP confirms.

Bells Chime, Signaling Election of Pope

VATICAN CITY - Bells chimed at St. Peter's Basilica on Tuesday evening, announcing to the world that a new pope was elected in the first papal conclave of the new millennium. Crowds in the square chanted: "Viva il Papa!" or "Long live the pope!"

The whole thing appears to be a big joke to me.  This is no different than what happened in Florida with the dimpled chads.  Why doesn't someone ask God who should lead the church?  Oh wait the cardnals will know better (unless they are too old).  Not to poop on the new pope but the whole thing is suspect.  Where were the cardnals and the grey smoke when Peter was made the head of the Church.  IMHO

Hello McFly, thats what the cardinals are doing, they meet and talk things out discuss all the possible people and ask God to guide them in making the right choice.

Oh, heck no.  We don't even know WHO they chose yet.  Once we do, then they'll discuss every moment of the new pope's life for the next X days, just until the coronarion or swearing-in or whatever.  They they'll cover that all day, etc, etc, etc.....

If you don't like how we Catholics do things, then mind your own business.

As photoman said, they pray for guidence and hope they do the right thing. Which is what I did when I had multiple job offers.

Plus, if they wanted to do it like when Peter was made head, then we should wait for Jesus to stop by and name one? For some reason I think if the big guy makes an appearence then he'll take over.

Jeez, every thread's gotta bring out somebody who doesn't like my religion.

The importance of the name that he chose, the views they must have voted on, which one of the three robes he had to wear, the color of his left eye and after they interview 6,000 people that all say one of three things. It's all just so important .

When it becomes clear that the new Pope isn't going to endorse homosexual marraige, ordain female priests, promote birth control and abortion, etc, the media will get tired of the Catholic Church.

What ever, all I have heard is how picking this cardinal will unite South America, this cardnal will do this for Africa.  Admit it that it is just as political as electing a President!  You watch they will pick someone who is from some place that needs uniting and that can speak in front of the camera and clear up this priest touching young boys crap.  AND NO ONE WILL ASK GOD ONCE WHAT HE THINKS!

Unless, say, Hillary Clinton steps out onto that balcony, the media will go onto their next fixation.

I am not a catholic and never will be but its interesting to see how this develops. I nothing against Roman Catholics as individuals.
