Thats right, got my X26 last night after 8 hours of OMG boring training... |
Wise words. Pay attention to them young padawan. It is a tool, a good tool but it won't always work for you. ETA: And congrats. Did you take a 5 second shot or did you chicken out? Joe |
When we got certified as users a couple years ago, I chickened out.... When I took the Taser Instructors Course, I figured my previous exposure above was good enough as I have experienced first hand, in a "real world" incident, the effects of the X-26 Taser. That was enough for me... I KNOW WHAT IT WILL DO TO YOU!! Yep... I'm a chicken... |

Took the five, was speaking coherently during the last second. A distinct "Ahh, crap!" Have the video. You can hear my Lt. laughing like a high school girl along with everyone else. But I grew up around hot wire, worked in electrical backup power, so I was familiar with being shocked... |
|
Didn't take the ride...I know what its like from watching countless videos and seeing some of our other officers go through it as well as a live incident in which another officer's Taser prevented me from having to shoot a man with a knife back in August. I get it, it hurts. I'm of the philosophy that I wasn't required to take a 9mm HP round in order to carry my HK USP or get wacked with the ASP to carry that, so there is no logical reason to NEED to experince the Taser...just the way I look at it. BTW I have been sprayed with Sabre Red OC...that WAS required to graduate my academy...I would rather take a 9mm to the vest than ever go through OC again. |
Sounds like they need to hit the road and kick rocks anyway. I think the only disadvantage to the taser is that alot of officers use it as a crutch and depend on it too much. |
I had always wondered if anyone else in the world felt the same way as I do about the Taser, I'm glad at least one person does. I do understand the OC spray though, since it's incredibly likely you'll at least get a good whiff of it if/when you use it, then it's good to know what to expect, but I see no reason at all for the self-Tazing. |
The first three times I deployed my Taser were all while tangled up on the ground with a suspect and took a few small zaps myself. |

took the five second ride (darts in the back) and a seperate drive stun while in instructor school. Didn't really hurt (my definition of pain) but is hard to explain the sensation, for me atleast. definately works. While training our Dept, we had about 1/2 of our dept, including the Chief and a couple of LT's (about 20 guys/gals) take full 5 second rides (we only offer full 5 seconds with dart deployment in training). I got to do several of them. I have also had a few "real life" deployments and it has worked perfect for me. Its a great tool, but it is just that a tool in your arsenal. Do NOT become over depended or let it change the way you work just because you have one, ie: do not go into a situation alone that you would not have before. It not a silver bullet. Stay Safe, J- |

For anyone having problems getting taser's approved send me a PM and I will e-mail you the proposal that I wrote to get ours. My dept/city was the same way. I wrote the proposal with the tone of drastically reducing liability and added case law and court rulings that show that Taser's are accepted by courts as being a good and safe piece of equipement and will ding you if you don't have em' but could have used them. Thats what swung it in our direction and we took shipment of 47 tasers about 6 weeks after my proposal was presented at City council. Plus the prevaling opinion on how to "save" a person in the Exicited Delirium it to tase them immediately and get them under control and to the hospital. Our first taser deployment was exactly like that. Saved the guy. Tasers can be viewed as a "rescue" tool also. This goes for anyone that would want a copy, just shoot me a PM. J- |

just went through instructor school. out of fifteen guys I was the only one dumb enough to take the five second ride. one other guy took an exposure, but after me, he only wanted three seconds it wasn't what i would call pain.... more like extremely uncomfortable. good experience. My department is too budget minded right now to consider the x-26. we carry the m-26, we bought them used off a department that was going to upgrade to the x-26. |
