Job I'm in the running for requires one.  I haven't had a cigarette since 2010, haven't dipped since 2011, but I smoke an occasional cigar, last one being upon graduation, been almost 2 months at this point.  Not sure if te test is blood, pee, or hair.  Am I screwed?

Hair test for nicotine? Not fair, secondhand smoke can be anywhere, too expensive as well.

Pee and blood? Gone in a few hours.

IIRC, they also do it during life insurance bloodwork to see if you're lying about not being a smoker.

They do blood at my job, forget the marker they look for, researched it, leaves the body in about a week.

I am also curious as to what field requires this.  Also not real sure on the legalities of it?

This is relevant to my interests.  May have one of these tests coming up.

A lot of hospitals have been doing it, saves them money on health insurance coverage.

With the popularity if E-cigarettes I wonder how that works now.

Pretty much this, don't g e t me wrong, I'm not bitching, just wondering.

Okay, so apparently the test is for 'cotinine', a metabolite of nicotine, and for casual smokers it is gone in a couple days.  Heavy smokers may test positive for a month even if they quit!

Passive exposure to tobacco smoke can make you test positive.  This is kinda messed up, I'd hate to be in that situation. How do you explain that away? It's got all sorts of legal mess all over it. So, you can't sit at a bar and watch a game and have a burger because someone is smoking near you?

I was told two weeks by a possible future employer. Something called a rapid nicotine test. Haven't taken it yet and I don't know if its blood or urine.

This.

Or those who are using other non tobacco related nicotine delivery systems (gum, mints etc).
Nicotine isn't the problem, it is the other shit in the tobacco leaf (and additives) that gives you teh cancers.

There's a hospital here that has a no smoking policy.  I remember someone here saying he worked in a cigar shop and their CEO was a regular customer.

I asked my health insurance company that and couldn't get a straight answer, they state "tobacco use".

Our company swabs the mouth or insurance reasons.

I think it is 7 days after consuming nicotine, that they can detect.

There is nicotine in vegetables. Everybody has some nicotine in their systems. You get more nicotine from eating a tomato than you do from being in a smoke filled room for 8 hours.

Nicotine is now thought to prevent Parkinson's Disease. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-57583731/eating-nicotine-containing-produce-like-peppers-tomatoes-may-lower-parkinsons-risk/

What about people who 'vape' their nicotine. They aren't ingesting all the other bad stuff that tobacco smoke contains, just a bit of nicotine.

I'm afraid I'd tell any company that goes to such ridiculous measures in the hiring process...instead of hiring the best candidate based on their skillsets/qualifications....to go fuck up a rope. But that's just me.

Don't quit your job you have now.

Many companies already test for nicotine for insurance purposes, and I bet Obamacare will force a majority of them to do so to try to mitigate rising insurance costs.

Yep' the Cleveland Clinic does testing for it, and the GF's company was thinking of doing it for lower health insurance rates as well.

I keep waiting for our company to do this.  We have a 'smoker' and 'non-smoker' Health insurance rate, but it's self-certifying (under penalty of termination, but I don't know that they've ever done that).  So my guess is that we would have a lot of liars.  (You also get the 'non-smoker' rate if you sign up for the companies smoking-cessation program)

It would be pretty easy for them to do, we already have mandatory physicals that we have to go through, and they jack your rates if you're outta the zone there, too, or you don't take them.

They don't just test for nicotine. They also test for other tobacco specific compounds as well in order to rule out crap like gum and patches and e-cigs.

Total bullshit.  You want to charge me more for health insurance?  That's fair.  You want to ban me from smoking on your property?  That's fair.  What I do on my own time is my own business.

It's also a dangerous thing to accept.  Wait a generation and we'll have company approved grocery lists.  Why not?  If I can't smoke on my own time then Mr. Fatass over there is barred from all fast food for the duration of his employment.  Like to drink...... and on and on.

Communist.  It's their business, their rules.  If the company safety officer wants to to come by your house at night to make sure all your household chemicals are in properly labeled containers, well you had best welcome him in and suck your bosses dick the next morning, or join the FSA you stupid obama voting DU troll.

Thank you for showing me the error of my ways friend!  I will immediately turn over my CC records to the HR department and have the IT staff put a camera in every room of my house to make sure I'm following the company's guidelines.

Typically, they don't care, as any form of tobacco use generally leads to the higher rates.

Life insurance needed to do a mouth swab.

No idea what the time length was to get it out of your system.

Once you are swabbed you can go back to smoking, dipping, etc...

Yeah, they're sneaky about it.  I'm sure it's in the fine print but they tell you it's to measure cholesterol, liver function tests (LFT's), etc.

When I went to my Green Card physical, they didn't tell me in advance that they would be doing a urine drug screen.  I wonder how many people have been busted on that one!

Ours is a no nicotine policy, inc gum, patches and e-cigs, so far as they're concerned if you're still on substitutes you haven't quit, its a threshold amount though, don't have to read zeroes, same as pretty much all toxicology tests. It is for an insurance break. They offer cessation classes on compensated time, but do not give the discount until biometric screening, a physical, a questionaire, and a wellness class. They have prosecuted people for fraud quiting temporarily. The organization is cut throat enough co-workers will report you if they know you're getting the discount.

I remember AK air swabbed, I wondered how that wasn't discrimination.

If it's anything like the test I had to take for life insurance, they'll ask for pee and blood* and 90 days is long enough.

*Life insurance tests for cholesterol and diabetes and stuff, as well as drugs, so I'm not sure which (blood or urine) goes to your smoking issue.
