I bought a new 64 bit, Win7, Pentium dual-core system with 3GB RAM.  I want to bump it up in RAM.  I opened it up, and there are 2 slots.  Does that mean that I need to get two DDR2 RAM cards with as high a piece of RAM as I can?

It means you can put two dimms in that your laptop supports. Most support 4GB now, some more, some less. Since yours supports 3GB, I would guess that 4GB is not out of the question.

Just go to crucial.com and look up your laptop model and they will tell you exactly what type and how much memory you can put in it.

use the ram selector at crucial.com to find your maximum configuration.

I'd buy whatever that is.

Post the model but usually laptops will take 2 sticks of 2GB for a total of 4GB.

if you have Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions of Windows 7, you can run up to 192GB of RAM

but I don't think anyone makes 96GB SO-DIMMS
