My Volvo S80 Turbo has been dying out intermittently. Took it to Carmax where the warranty is at. They were unable to pull the codes or duplicate the problem. I got it back, it died again 2 weeks later. This time, Carmax sent it to Volvo and they didn't pull any codes or were able to duplicate the problem. I just dies at random. I know there is an ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) Recall however, no recall or warranty work will be done until the ETM completely fails. Volvo knows this, the NHTSA knows this as well. I;m just afraid of this thing dying on me going 70 MPH on the highway one night and getting rear ended, or crossing an intersection and getting T boned. What I'm planning to do is get a realtime datalog so I can build a case with Carmax or Volvo to replace the ETM before the required failure. It seems like the code is a soft code stored in the ECU then when restarted it clears it. I want a datalogger that I can hook up to the OBDII port and drive around and it will record the code when the car dies and the ability to hook it to my laptop and print the results. Upgradable via software via the web is a plus. I was looking at Equus brand. Any suggestions for a good datalogger? I am looking to spend $200 or less. |

If you have a laptop, you can use this: www.obd-2.com/ I've used it for domestics and imports. |
I have two high end scanners, but I recently purchased a really cool plug in OBDII Recorder.![]() OBDII Recorder You just plug it into the OBDII port and drive. After a few hours (or days) you unplug it and connect it to your PC to get a printable report. |
what kind brand and model is that? |
It's a Matco Pro-scan..MD1007RC..........It get a touch deeper than just code reading...does Data streams, Movies, Freeze Frames, Graphing...and other features I have yet to play with. |
Not knowing what all is happing with this situation one guess would be that your control module is heating up and breaking down, after it cools back down the car will run again. If this is happing it is very possible that it will not pull a code |
What causes this? How can I diagnose this to see if this is indeed the problem? |
Replace with 'known good unit.'

I just bought the CRecorder datalogger that was posted a few posts up. I took the car for a driver some highspeed runs and some stop and go to log some data. Not all parameters were measured. I emailed the techsupport but it seems like they are in China. I seen an "American" version on Amazon for double the price. maybe i should've gotten that. I am still waiting for an email reply..... No codes were thrown nor did the car die out. But it did graph and record my "Overspeed" warnings ![]() Looking for a sweet price on the Equus 3140.... |
I already have a hand held scanner. What can the laptops do that the handhelds can't? |
