Hopefully this means that the Bayraktars are going to continue doing work around Kherson. I know it's debatable how useful they are in a war like this, but I really hope we're training Ukrainians on Grey Eagles, Predators, or other systems.

I'm sure the Ukrainian military understands this.  They have to keep the pressure up on Russian air defense systems.  Small systems can get HARMs and bigger systems can have their radars taken out.   Other groups of identified SAM sites can be hit with HIMARS to allow breathing room for the drones and aircraft at the frontlines then.   At least until the next Russian deliveries of SAM equipment roll up in a few days and the cycle is repeated.

I would be surprised if any of this were to come true. It would be great if it came to pass,
for certain, but I don't give it much of a chance.

The thing that stands out the most is the part about Lavrov supposedly being lined up

Why would a former Russian ambassador want to talk to the agency that is the most

Or just put the troops in housing of the "liberated territories"

That definitely seems like what they're doing, and it seems to be working great in terms of allowing the Ukrainians to conduct CAS and go to work with the Bayraktars. From my perspective, the SEAD missions are going to have a fairly notable influence on the conflict. Russia is already having to bring in S-300s from places like Syria, which says to me that their losses are substantial.

The movement of numerous S-300 systems from Russia and Syria like you said is another indicator that losses of these big systems might be more substantial than we've been hearing about.

I'm surprised how people don't understand sarcastic tones in person, it's easy to not get a point across using text, but in person you should pick up on it.

Agreed.

Not to derail this thread too much, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sunni Arab insurgency against Assad pick up again. Prior to Russian intervention in 2015, Assad was on the verge of collapse, with people discussing when he was going to flee the country or get dragged through the streets like Qaddafi. Ultimately, it was Russian air strikes, ISR, and SOF that bailed him out. With the thrashing that Russia is taking in Ukraine, Assad can kiss most of his Russian support goodbye. Without Russian air support and ISR, the SAA is once again likely not going to be able to defeat the Sunni Arab insurgent groups (which aren't gone, but have gone underground and are fighting asymmetrically again).

Declining Russian influence is going to significantly alter the world, to be sure. If we play our cards right, the west can come out in a very favorable position.

Except it’s the opposite. Russia claimed Ukraine was theirs in the same way China claims Taiwan is theirs. “Slavic peoples of former rule” is the same as “Chinese people of former rule”.

It is so tantalizingly close to the range of the system.  They were able to use standard M-31 rounds and get 120km range with tail control surfaces.

Those Kherson update maps always show a new batch of SAM systems killed, and a rising number of Ukrainian Air Force sorties, which we know to be slinging HARMs.  I think Kherson is a black hole that Russia is pouring SAM systems into right now.

Do we think that the Ukrainians have been delayed just by good defenses and allocation of resources north or are they intentionally slow rolling the Kherson offensive?  They have local air and artillery superiority now and the river means that Russia can only trickle equipment to their guys in plain view.  Sounds like a shooting gallery.  If they don't throw human waves into frontal assaults they should be able to rack up a very favorable ratio of losses just sitting there, and fighting in the city itself will be a bastard, so I wonder if they might prefer to stretch those circumstances out.

In order to fire from a sea based platform, the launcher needs a special software set that is normally not loaded, it basically removes or redefines some of criteria that allow launch.

The greater range system is the new XM403/4 GMLRS-ER

Hopefully this means that the Bayraktars are going to contine doing work around Kherson.

Although I do question Chuck's maps showing with any real accuracy where the Ukrainian forces are, his claims of killed vehicles and aircraft do come directly from either Operational Command South or East and other sources I have learned to trust, and so the info tends to be accurate on that count.

I think as you do, right now there is a lot of stuff to hit in the South, but Ukraine can sort of slow roll for now and pummel major Russian forces trapped in that area until sufficiently weakened, they then could suddenly make an offensive to take Kherson at some point.

Hopefully this means that the Bayraktars are going to contine doing work around Kherson.

That is where I noticed desperation on the Russian side.  S-300 systems are very expensive and to learn that they can't reliably intercept HIMARS, or even the latest short ranged TOR systems were incapable of the same means they are only good for getting aircraft and helicopters, and forcing the Ukrainians to fly low.  They might as well be used as a poor man's inaccurate HIMARS then.
