If you look at what was made and where they were built, its pretty easy to see why they didnt last. - Colossus at Rhodes was toppled and metal was sold off - Hanging gardens were not cared for or maintained - Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was destroyed by an earthquake - Lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake - Temple of Artemis was destroyed by war - Statue of Zeus was destroyed in another earthquake I suppose its possible that Keith Richards could write a memoir some day about visiting them as they were first built. |

As a matter of fact, that's EXACTLY what happened to the exteriors of the Great Pyramids. they were faced with smoothly-faced limestone which gleamed in the morning light.  The city of Cairo is just a short distance from the Great Pyramid. I'd be very surprised if many of the older buildings were made from that material. |

I'd be very surprised if many of the older buildings were made from that material. The bent pyramid retains the most outer casing stone and it's even older than Giza. Weird.

This is a good thread, all the other wonders seemed cool and its sad they fell down. The reason they fell down is because they were actual things, not fucking rock piles. What is a rock pile gonna fall down into? Another fucking pile? They might as well be fallen over already. |
