I'm not sure what that was.

I've noticed it happening on previous launches as well.  Apparently it's SOP.

ETA....looks like two hoops around the stage 2 engine that give way when it starts to expand from the heat after it ignites.  Maybe to maintain the shape of the cone up through that point?

Hopefully they have the downward looking first stage video to provide useful info.  Was it another grid fin failure or a new issue?

That ring was probably just ice. From a previous flight.

49 'Atta Boys', one 'Oh Shit' erases them.
That's how it was where I worked.
Seriously though 49 successes and 1'almost' is excellent, said it was a soft landing so perhaps it can be recovered and some components salvaged?
I shall never forget the sight of 2 landing in sync after sending the Tesla Car into orbit.

How do they attempt to catch the fairing halves?
I know they have the ships with the nets but the fairings are jettisoned about 60 miles up.
Never heard anything about any sort of guidance system, perhaps they have some sort of para foil?
Details, PLEASE?

Notional picture of a first stage in the water.

Look for the water splash to the right ahead of the boat then as the splash cloud approaches the boat and eventually you see water droplets on the camera lens.

I want to see the downward facing first stage camera video.

Water landing splash...but not the first stage impacting water.

yeah... But I'm sure this booster will not be flying again.

I'm sure they'll salvage the Grid-fins at least.

Thanks for the pic.
So, I'm guessing it free falls and is tracked by the recovery vessels, which hope to be at the correct location at the correct time?
Was just curios if the chute had any automated controls, similar to how a human maneuvers with the controls lines, or whatever they are called.

Are you sure that's a Heavy core? That looks like a pic of them towing in the Falcon 9 booster that landed in the water just offshore of the Cape a year or two ago.

AFSPC-52 is supposed to launch sometime this year and AFSPC-44 is supposed to launch sometime next year.

ETA:  Looks like more FH launches planned according to their draft environmental assessment.

Speaking of Falcon Heavy...  plans for an extended fairing and vertical integration facility from their recent draft environment assessment.  That will take a lot of things away from Delta IV Heavy.

Has anyone seen downward facing video from the first stage that ended up in the water on the last Falcon 9 launch?

Obviously this is during the descent to landing.

Already talking about a scrub tonight.
Cold front pushing through and the upper level winds are predicted to be the problem.

After this launch Falcon 9 will have as many launches as Atlas V

Last landing miss was apparently because of serious unexpected winds causing booster to divert.

Things are pretty calm here right now and the front that came in is pretty weak , good chance it will go tonight.

Bit of high OVC but that's a bit of a plus, with that the light from a night launch get's reflected back towards the ground and it really intensifies the illumination.

"Beginning with the CRS-21 mission late this year, the new Dragon 2 cargo capsules will splash down under parachutes in the Atlantic Ocean east of Florida, rather than the current recovery zone in the Pacific Ocean west of Baja California, SpaceX officials said last year."

Awesome.  Some people may get to see or hear re-entry.

Were those vacation visits?

I saw the shuttle launch the Hubble way back when. I will always appreciate that opportunity. I was but a wee lad, just learning to really tie one on.

Yes.
Since my wife grew up here and is a bit of a space nut also, we traveled back here a lot and planned around launches, landings and events.
We have a lot of family here.

After a few back and forths now, let me just say, Welcome to America!

If you feel like it, tell us what you did with the dealership / car lot. Some stories go way back at this point.
