My newest bike: A Roscoe 7 that I picked up a couple of months ago. I’ve always wanted to try mountain biking (having been primarily a road guy in the past, more on that in a moment) and it’s been awesome so far. Of course I laid it down on our local pump track the first time I took it out and tore the seat up lol  My road bike, when I still had one, was a Specialized Allez Elite. I loved that bike. I bought it right out of high school as a graduation gift to myself, with the bucks I’d made that summer. Rode that thing all over until someone stole it out of my garage 2-3 years later  I haven’t done much road riding since then but I do still have a Specialized Sirrus that I rode before the Allez. I’ll still take that out for road rides but it’s not the same. Someday I’ll buy another road bike but for now I’m focusing on MTB  Attached File |

I’d try and stick to a local bike shop personally. |

Our local Trek store told me to just take the bike and make sure I put on one of their demo helmets. No DL, CC, or blood oath required. It was great. That store is great overall. Everyone is super helpful and congenial. If anyone lives in or near Johnson City I would highly recommend checking them out. There’s at least one other locally-owned store here too which I haven’t been to but need to - good to patronize the local guys too. |

They generally have mechanics who know what they are doing. Likewise we can help here. Bikes aren’t too hard to work on. I don’t qualify as a mechanic but I’ve done a lot of minor stuff on my own bikes over the years. |

I'm a very casual biker, but I need to make a point of getting out on the foothills trails this year. I've got a Yeti SB130 Turq T2. Recently, we've mostly used our MTBs to get around national parks...  Mostly, I value having intact clavicles, and not being help up at work recovering from an injury. A friend from work recently crashed and had multiple broken ribs, a pneumothorax, and was out for a few months. |

Sitting on the sofa is deadly. :) But, I get what you're saying. We all have our limitations and comfort zones. I won't do certain drops and Double Blacks that my friends will do. I place being able to make it to work the next day of high importance. That said, my short term disability insurance has been upgraded for years, because I know sooner or later, my luck is gonna run out.

I ride with this veterans non profit to raise awareness for PTSD, they host these challenges, one is in Texas, Mid west, and California, I was able to ride them all. last years California challenge was epic, we had three Canadian army veterans, two still reservists, and 12 Bundeswehr veterans and active soldiers. IT was RAD, fully escorted by police, fire and so on. Texas is roughly 367 miles, it starts again may 5-11, I will be there, the mid west challenge is 457 miles with 16k vertical, CA is 500 ish with 20k vert, SUPER FUN!

Yeah I stopped doing tricks for that reason. I grew up racing BMX and then go heavily into freestyle BMX and Dirt jumper MTBs. I could do all the big tricks. Front flips, back flips, 360s up to 720s, etc but all that came at a big price. Tons of broken bones. Nowadays none of that is worth it anymore and I’m getting older. My back is jacked up enough from the Army. No need to keep hurting myself riding. I’ll still hit prolines but just jump nothing crazy. |

Both the amazing athletes and the fat using whatever tools the need to, to get off the starting line. In fact the fat, slow and old..are the most allowed and welcome in my book. They need the most help and encouragement, not shit slung at them for using the tools they need to, to make positive changes for themselves. Sling shit at me. Welcome them with grace. |
