I need an app that will provide GPS navigation even when there is no data service available. Google maps is not up for the challenge; Suggestions? |

I don't know if anyone is looking at this thread, but I looked up this NavFree because I wanted something like it too and it's getting really bad reviews in the last day or two. People are saying an update made it lose all cached maps, it can't re-download them, and is eating up their processor and battery. Anyone else that has this app notice anything like this? If this gets fixed I'm downloading it too because it looks awesome. |

Also if the app is active in the background GPS is active too, sucking up the battery. I've been trying Co-pilot but the directions seem a bit It'll use paths that require "lots" of turns and have to deal with a lot of traffic lights when there is a route that's a literal straight shot from point A to point B with no traffic lights or stops but it doesn't list that route as an option, however it seems to be smart enough to know when I start that better route to recalculate that route instead of having me made a needless U-turn to use the route the app originally set. Co-Pilot also uses the street number instead of the names. What the hell Virginia Route 411 and why should I be taking that exit?![]() |

If you don't NEED turn-by-turn directions and want a more responsive app, try mapDroyd. It uses maps from openstreetmap.org https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.osa.android.mapdroyd&hl=en |

I've been looking for one that functions close to the same way for hunting in places where I have no service. |

I take back the positive things I said about NavFree.
I am uninstalling it due to it hanging up and taking a long time to download maps today. Yesterday after the update I was able to download maps very fast, now I can't get any new maps to finish downloading. Now I'm looking for a new gps navigation app for my tablet... |

Ok, Co-pilot is garbage too. It's alternative route is completely useless. For example if I'm trying to go from Chesapeake, VA to Hampton it'll set 3 routes that require using the I-64 tunnel. If I manually edit the route to take the I-664 it will though in a U-turn on the other side of the river, have me circle back and take I-64 to get to Hampton. WTF. ![]() I guess I'll need to keep my Garmin. So much for having an all in one device. |

Quoted: I don't know about the google nav app, but you can download sections of google maps to your phone for offline use. You can use that for old school navigation. That doesn't do any good when you don't know where an address is. Sure I could navigate the old school why from point A to point B, problem is there is no why to find out where point B is on the map. There is no search option what so ever without a data connection. That's the problem. |

When my Samsung i900 Omnia was working it came with Route66 installed. I liked it so much I downloaded the Free version on my new Sony Xperia U. Free downloadable maps, quick GPS acquisition, a bit laggy through narrow Italian streets but it' ll be fine for long range useq Oh battery use inexistant!!! |
