Friend of mine recently divorced after 25 years has taken to hitting the pipe. He has saved my ass more than once and I have done the same. I find him walking down the road covered in mud and barefoot at 1100. I pick him up take him home. He is totally incoherent, After I drop him off I call his son and tell him to go check on his dad. Now the guy wants to kick my ass because I tried to get him some help. If a LEO had come down the road before me he would have been in the Loony Bin.

Friends don't let friends become crackheads or sit down and STFU.

This is all you can do.  Get him to a professional ASAP before something really bad happens.

Thanks, I thought it was better to loose a friendship than lose a bro.

He's embarassed over the fact you found him in the state he was in. Anger is part of the grief process and he's still in that stage. Let him be mad. At least he's alive to be mad at you.  If he cools down go see him and talk to him. I'd say if he stays pissed off then until he gets to the point where he wants help you should stay away. Sometimes we can't be our brother's keeper when they don't want any assistance. Finding bottom is tough but at least you can be there to pick him up when he hits there.

One thing that puzzles me is how do people know where to find crack. You said the guy was married for 25 years, gets a divorce, and starts doing crack. If I decided today that I wanted to smoke crack, I wouldn't have a clue where to buy it. And I can promise you that none of my friends would have a clue where to get me some crack. This makes me think that this friend of yours was doing crack long before he got a divorce, is hanging out with some bad people, and the problem is much more severe than you think.

Drive through the 'bad area' of any major metropolitan area after 7pm.

Hell, in Bethlehem, PA a guy I knew, as a joke, asked some random dude 'Hey, where the rock at?', the guy proceeded to give him directions. It's really not that hard.

I'd say it would be uncommon for a decent family man to decide after a divorce, that he's gonna turn to crack and head down to the project to pick some up.
