I was going to change the weight used in my car but would like to get some opinions first. The factory says to use 0w40 but it is kinda hard to find a place that stocks it around here(I don't change the oil). Is it ok to switch to 5w40? Is there any other weights that are recommended. I live in DFW, TX so extreme cold shouldn't influence the decision.

Go with what the manual says. Wallworld should have tons of Mobile1 0W/40.

Best to go with what the manual says...Unless you're planning a stay in Alaska.....or Buffalo, NY

5W-40 should be fine, but where are you that 0W-40 is hard to find?  You should be able to get a case in at any parts store in Texas.

One caution –– a lot of the 5W-40s are fleet oils and have a much stronger additive package to deal with deisel use.  If you have a leaker, a fleet oil will kill your cat a lot faster.

Crossfire SRT-6. I am not looking to change the oil myself. I have it done at a Qwik Car and it costs $115.

I didn't know anyone required/recommended 0 weight at standard.  Anyway, you could easily use 5W-40.  The only reason 0w-40 is stated is for fuel economy ratings.

Use synthetic engine oils, approved to MB 229.3 or MB 229.5, such as Mopar part number 05127394AA. Synthetic SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-40 engine oils approved to API SL and/or GF-3 may be substituted. The FSS may not alert for an oil change at the proper interval if an unapproved product is used; engine damage and reduced engine life may result.

Super charged engine.
MB is Mercedes part numbers.

Not positive, but I think it uses the engine oil for the super charger as well.
Basically it is an AMG with chrysler skin.

You can use Mobil 1 0w40 or 5w40.  Its the only oil we will put in AMG engines.

The supercharger uses seperate oil, it is self contained.  It is very expensive from MB, but I can't remember at the moment who made it or what company its from.  I'll need to see if I have a bottle at work.  They just slapped an MB label over the original and you can see through it and read it.

You shouldn't need to mess with the supercharger oil  I've never had to check them or anything on the AMG motors, on the old 111 motors it is a different story.

Make sure they are using a fleece element oil filter.  It will be pure white in color with a "hot glue" spiral all around the element.  Do not accept cheap shit filters.  They don't fit, and they WILL crumble.  I've seen it many, many times.

The transmission requires a Mercedes specific fluid as well, and is filled for life.  We recommend servicing at 100K miles anyway.  It does not have a dipstick, and you cannot check it without a "shop dipstick".

Rear axle doesn't require service either.

Your car is essentially a slightly remade R170 SLK 32 AMG.  Funny thing I noticed is that the crossfire FSS had a 7500 mile counter and the MB was set to either 10K or 13K miles.

ETA: Supercharger takes Mobil Jet Oil II

Latest info I could get from Startek info about mobil 1 is from 2005 and it says mb229.5 spec is the Mobil European formula 0w40.

There is a whole list of oils that are approved but my shitty photo hosting won't let me post the screen shot and I'm too dumb to figure out how to copy and paste from adobe.pdf files.

Why does the synthetic I use not last as long as other wieghts? I noticed that when I checked the oil it was dirty and low way earlier than other synthetics. The gentleman at the Qwik Kar informed me that 5w40 is mainly used for heavy diesels. Is this true?

Don't worry about how dirty it "looks".  Change it when the FSS indicator tells you to.

I've turned many a wrench on these types.  Longevity does not appear affected at all unless someone uses conventional oil which will cause the rings to stick.

if your worried you can do an oil analysis. they sell the kits online and they tell you a lot about your oil.
