I was doing weighted crunches tonight when it occurred to me that they might be the source of my subtle constant low back pain.  

I tried a few with strong spinal extension and they were much easier for singles with less struggling to the top.

Maybe there's something to that anti-bender ball thread from a few days ago.

i work my back with extensions but less than ABS,  i do a around 4 to 1 ratio and lots of stretching the cure to pain is strengthening and stretching.  



and there are better ab exercises than the venerable sit-up, try something else unless you need to do sit-ups for a PFT.

Have you seen a Doctor about the source of your subtle constant low back pain.
