If you could only have one rifle for all purposes; no other uppers or conversions. Which would you choose?

| AR15 in 5.56 - just about any brand depending on your available funds and how long you want to wait will do fine. Any given ar15 has durability, ease of use, ease of maintenance (i've watched a 10 yr old girl disassemble and reassemble the rifle in under 1min.) abundance of ammo, relatively cheap to shoot, plenty of replacement parts that are also cheap, plenty of kill power. |

My firearm choices are all defense/offense based. I'm not opposed to a hunting arm, or range rifle, it is just that I'm not a hunter or 1000 yard Hawkeye. That said I think along SHTF scenarios. If the world went into the crapper what would be most available in reference to parts ? I love the AR platform because of the interchangeability of parts. Ammo/caliber the same way. .45, 9mm, .38, 5.56, .308, .30, 12g, I stick to the SHTF availability track.
I may never need all that 'thinkin' but my son or grandson might. |
My M14 type rifle..you can fight,snipe and put food on the table..weight no problem and .308 will drop you with 1 shot out to 1000 yds.I still love my carbines for up close wich is when engagements happen 95% of the time but for an all around survival rifle..M14

A quality 5.56 M4 type carbine with a 16 inch chrome barrel , a quality light ,and a quality dot sight . Preferably using heavier bullets such as 75 and 77 grain in a 1/7 twist barrel . I used to prefer a FAL carbine ,but honestly I can carry more 5.56 in a smaller lighter package and I can switch targets faster with a 5.56 carbine . It doesn't cover long range but with my eyes I can't usually pick out a target past 400 yards unless it's painted blaze orange anyway . |

My go-to, which is a 5.56 16" middy, FF rail, 2moa Aimpoint. Might not be "the best", but it's the one I'm most familiar with and shoot the most. So it's the best for me.
I feel the second part is more influential then the first when considering this question. |

Either the AR or the AK. You can make arguments for both. I think the AK is the better call for inside 100yds, the AR for everything after that. I love my M1A but it is a big gun and ammo is heavy and bulky. Now, if there is absolutely no chance for maintenance and repair, then I'd grab a bolt gun, probably my 98k. I love that impossible to break extractor. |

M1A/M14 rifle. About the best option I've seen.
A budget option might be an SKS or AK style rifle. I've got quite a collection of various semi-auto combat rifles these days, and truthfully, all work quite decent. True that some are more accurate than others. Also true that some are chambered for more effective hunting calibers than others. If you think I drink M14 Kool-aid, then you would be right! I've owned M14's for some years, and they are not just perfect at anything. But out of my collection of semi-auto's they seem to be the best dual purpose "one gun for everything". I suppose a case can be made for about anything that shoots, and a lot depends on the person and his likes/dislikes. |
