A Sarasota Police officer shot and killed an armed robber inside a Walgreen's store at U.S. 41 and Myrtle Avenue today, police said.

A man walked into the store about 10:15 a.m., went back to the pharmacy and at gunpoint demanded the painkillers oxycontin and dilautid, said Capt. Mikel Holloway. He was given the drugs by employees, and he attempted to leave the store.

Someone in the store called 911 to report an armed robbery in progress, and officers were dispatched.


Two officers entered the store within minutes, and another staked out the rear of the store. The officers inside confronted the robber in an aisle, and ordered the man to drop his weapon.

He did not drop the weapon, so one officer fired several rounds from his AR-15 assault rifle, Holloway said.

The man was killed on the scene. No officers, employees or customers were injured.

The investigation is continuing. The name of the dead man, and those of the officers involved, were not immediately available.
