Please de-stupidify me. Why do many (most?) machine guns fire from an open bolt? seems to me like it's a good way to jam up the gun with dirt and shit. what's the advantage? |

The advantage is cooling... When the gun is not firing, and the barrel is hot, air can circulate through the barrel/chamber & cool it faster than a closed-bolt weapon. It is also a much simpler & more reliable mode of fire for belt-fed weapons, as there are less timing issues to worry about than with a closed-bolt action.... |

I must've missed the "no asking questions about firearms" clause in the terms of use. I don't think asking a question about the function of firearms on a firearms website equates to doing my homework for me. and even if it did, you didn't help, so you don't get to say "we." At any rate, you have my sincerest apologies for cluttering up GD with a thread about guns and messing up your navigation of walmart sucks threads. |

| There was a Future Weapons episode that touched on this - they profiled one of LWRC's products. That gun shot on full automatic from an open bolt, but shot from a closed bolt on semi. I can't remember the name of that gun, but I think the Marines are looking at it to replace some of their SAWs. |
