I'm a computer engineer and my roomie is an electrical engineer. The one thing missing from our lives is an oscilloscope. We had some old crappy ones back at the college, but I'm looking for a nice one and maybe even digital. I knew a guy that had one of the fluke portables and it was pretty nice. Anyone else using a scope around here?  -Foxxz |

Hey I think I smell a fellow radio man! Nice to hear from ya! I work for a Moto service center and maintain our local P25 system.. As far as scopes go I actually prefer the older CRT based 'O'-scopes. I find I can get a cleaner trace with them. That being said I'm currently in the market for a small Fluke. I need the portability. -JIM- |

Sorry I should have asked what fluke you used I played with a Fluke 123. I'm not sure what kinda of bandwidth I should consider. I have used 20MHz scopes and been left wanting. A 40 or 60MHz scope would likely be enough for me. I'll also +1 you on the response of digital scopes. They can be a little sluggish and miss blips. -Foxxz |

I've got an old analog unit and a Pico Technology ADC212. The pc based digital unit is pretty nice, but the bandwidth is limited. The one I have only runs 3 MS/s. The faster units run quite a bit of money, but I'm sure it's worth it if you need the bandwidth. The stuff I was doing involved measuring the operation of a paintball gun valve with a fast pressure transducer. I didn't need the bandwidth, but being able to store and view a one time event was why I went digital. They can also have a FFT function which can be handy. Edit: spelling |

Do the "expensive PC versions" have something like a persistence setting to overcome the (really, really) low refresh rate of a typical monitor? I run ultrasonic systems (which use something like a specialized oscilloscope), and our PC systems (Krautkramer USPC 2100) are great, but they don't show real-time traces like an analog+CRT unit does. |
Agreed. The scope I have now is a Tektronix TDS2002. It's not a bad scope for $1,300 especially considering it's two channels. I like it, but I spend more time hitting buttons than using it. I miss the old analog one I had. It took much less fiddling to use. I bought the digital one for the FFT feature, but it was actually worthless for the three applications where I needed an FFT. While the scope does show a nice graph, it wasn't as good as a simple list of frequencies (at specified intervals) that I wrote to use with an AD board I have.z |

I recently sold my Tek 485 and my Tek 2445. I have a Tek 710 digital scope that I use mostly as an AC voltage logger (it triggers on line voltage events and logs them for periods of up to a week). Sadly, that's just about the only thing "electronic" about my job these days. I think I still have an ancient Tektronics analog storage scope in the basement somewhere, one of the really old ones with plug-in modules. BTW, $3k for a digital scope isn't expensive, it's amazingly cheap considering what analog scopes used to cost (my 485 was over $10k new, and the 2445 was almost $10k). Now the 485 is worth a couple of hundred at most and the 2445 maybe $500. No, I didn't buy the older scopes new - they were both hamfest purchases.  I'm always amazed at how much electronics prices have nosedived while capabilities have greatly improved. When I got out of school, digital scopes (ANY digital scope) was a minimum $30k purchase, and that's in 1984 dollars!

You have an excellent point, I see other amateurs as being a little safer than the sharks that roam these waters !!! I mostly work 2m anyway (local repeaters or simplex), still waiting for code to go away before I upgrade too General....  Now back in my 11m outlaw days I was world wide for sure.....

Aww man, it's only 5 wpm. For me, it was like a hook dangling in front of me. Just 5wpm and I get HF. Anymore, though I'm into QRP CW. |
I use a Matco scope for automotive diagnostic work, but I think you can get a PC based scope for a lot less. |
