OK Hive what do you think?

Leupold 4.5-14x50 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm Rifle scope  on a Savage Mark II-BV

$1000 scope on a $350 22lr rifle

For a .22?

Overkill.
7/4/2008 6:59:18 AM EDT

Yes.  Maybe a $350 scope on a $350 .22.

The taste of poor quality lingers long after the sting of high cost....

You can always put it on another rifle...

Already Own the Scope for A rifle Thats going through a Reconfiguration so its not being used. Anyway I was Thinking If I have it I might as well  us it.

You'll have a great scope that could be put on another rifle when the time comes.

I always say to buy quality if you can afford it.

It's a case of too much scope or not enough gun.  That gun won't even perform up to the capability of that scope.  Now, if you want to trade scopes, I've got a Tasco.  lemme know.

There is no "overkill". There is only "open fire" and "I need to reload."

I'm putting a Trijicon 3-9X Accupoint on the 10/22 I just assembled.  Considering how much 22LR I shoot I say "fuck it, why not?".  I might as well look through good glass for the 90% of my rifle shooting I'll be doing with it.

7/4/2008 8:44:39 AM EDT
[#11]
I wouldn't do it--the limited range of the caliber eliminates the advantages of that scope.

Why stop there...........send it to Premier to get boosted

Overkill? Probably, but it's your toys. Play with them as you wish. If it was me and I could afford it I would. The scope can always be transferred to another rifle...

Like the others said, park it on the .22 until something else comes along.

I like the way you think.

OP, enjoy it on the rifle for now and transfer it to something else later if you wish.

I love good glass, but I never put a piece of glass on a rifle which is more expensive than the rifle itself.

just my $.02

I think you are better off with an extended focus range VX-III on a rimfire.

I have a Mark II BV with a 4x Burris rimfire scope.

FWIW and it's your call , but since you asked :

If it was my thousand:

Not over $550 and 9 power for the scope.

$250.00 Victoria's gift certificate for wife ( or steady lady , if that fits).

$200.00 for some kind of ammo or maybe toward the vaca and entertainment fund.

YMMV

Yeah, regarding transferring it, I selected slightly higher TPS rings than I needed so it can be easily switched over to my HBAR AR.  It has an EOTech on it right now and that would be fun on a 10/22 so it'll be good to switch them around when I want to mix things up.

I voted overkill, but since you already have the scope, go for it (and post pics of the results!)

One thing I hadn't considered before:  what's the minimum focus point on that scope?

At what ranges do you normally shoot .22?  If you have parallax issues at that range, then I'd go with something else - such as a Leupy VX-II EFR with LR reticle.

eta:  My catalog says it focuses from 50 yards to infinity.  If you shoot often at less than 50 yards, go with something else.

That's One or the reasons I wanted to try this scope out on my 22LR.  I Originally had a Leupold 22LR 4 power scope on the rifle then I Put a Old BURRIS FULLFIELD 3-9 on it.  Having Issues With the Zoom On the Burris  Because of the old style deer hunting ranging reticle .

Good Point! Now You got me Wondering . The Ranges I usually shoot at are: 50Feet, 25yards, 50yards and 100.  The Dedicated Leupold 22LR had  I believe a 75 yard Parallax And the Burris Had a 100 yard Parallax. I had No problems shooting @ 50 Feet.

Since The Leupold is a Long Range Scope with side Focus I may no be able to shoot @ the 50 feet and 25yards ranges. I guess I have To try it out to see if it works.

Its a Duplex reticle not a Mill dot so does it really Matter?  Whats The max range on a 22LR for accuracy ?

I'd pass or put the scope on something more deserving.

You have the nerve to ask if something is overkill on THIS board?

That word doesn't exist here.

[#28]
To me its overkill, however if you have the money and thats what you want go for it. I have one of the 4-12 Leupold rifleman scopes on my pimped out 10/22, but they only run around 225 vs 1,000 or more for a MKIV

I can't argue with quality glass, even for a .22.

Why not buy a fixed 4X Leupold rimfire special and put the other one on something that actually requires it?

OVERKILL!!!

As you get older you increasingly appreciate good optics as your eyes get worse. I despise cheap scopes, but your choice does seem like overkill. Here's what I recommend that's quality glass for a  lot less with comparable power:

Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x50

I have the same scope except 4-16x40 on my .17HMR CZ, and love it.
