I was stationed there for 2 years and loved it. It's a great place if you love hiking, fishing, shooting, hunting, skiing and, rock climbing.  There are ponds on post that are stocked with trout and even an on post range you can use.

My last stay at Ft Cartoon was ummmm shit over 20 years ago(unless you count weekends and At's downrange and I don't).   However, I still live in the area.  If you have specific questions about the area as opposed to on post ask here or shoot me an IM.

General Info.
Like everywhere else, some nice parts some shitty parts and they are intermingled to an extent.  Other posters, can give more accurate info.

The Sheriff is NFA friendly and seems like a decent guy. (I don't live in El paso county just nearby).

You hear lots of adds for specialty sports(gunshop).  While it is better than it used to be, I only buy shit on close out or if I can't wait to order it online.  As far as guns Sportsmans has a more limited selection but is generally cheaper.  Not sure on their gunsmith.

Taxes seen better seen worse.

Stuff to do?  Lots depends on your interest and orientation (no not that but single/married/kids/outdoors indooors etc)

Should have lots of options for hunting fishing and camping.  Not sure on gymnastics and football.  Though I do have a friend who teaches ballet and modern dance at several different locations.  I can ask her reference gymnastics next time I see her.

CCW is shall issue.  Just have to show proof of training.  Should consist of fill out the forms, get photo'd fingerprinted and cut a check.

There's a new small shop called Bravo Arms off of Union. They guys that work there are great and ammo is decently priced along with their guns.

Carson is GTG. I have to go down there every so often to take my MWD to the vet. Thats a plus for you too cause the army vets will work on your critters not just .mil critters. Lots of stuff to do in the area. You also can check out stuff to do on Pete (Peterson AFB) and the other bases around the area. enver is about an hour away plus any traffic you get caught in and theres more to do up there.

I strongly suggest if you like shooting join a gun range right away.  colorado is great don't know your mos or what you have done before.  I do not like the mech world and this has been a serious pitfall for me.

Right now, I'm aviation in 1st CAV and deployed.  I was 11B until I blew out my knees, now I'm and office b*tch. (not too happy about it either)

As long as we can find some hiking trails, and go shooting every so often, we should be good.
