My company is merging with another....trying to get a grasp on what they have on their network.  Anybody have a suggestion for a good/easy to use audit app.?  More worried about desktops than servers.
THANKS

If you just want to "see" what's on your network and you don't want to pay for something then try:  Nmap

Nessus,  though be careful because it can knock some things down.

not sure what you mean by network audit. What I think you're asking for is an audit of desktop computers, software, and attached devices; but you might be asking for "how many desktop computers do we have?"

to get a list of all the devices and names, just force all the dhcp leases to expire then see what registers as they get new leases. Or, dump the dhcp clients tables.

Computers, software, and attached devices are exactly what I'm looking for!

If you want to dive down into software and attached devices it gets more complex.  You didn't mention budget or the size of your organization so I will throw Altiris out there.  Be prepared to open the checkbook though.  Another thing is that most of the solutions that inventory software is going to require a client-side install.  You will either have to visit the machines or come up with a remote install plan.

There are also portable apps out there that you can run from a thumbdrive to inventory a machine you are sitting at...but once again you have to physically touch the machine.

I guess without knowing your current environment this is looking like a hard question to answer by the people that posted thus far.

If you're a (mostly) Microsoft shop, you can force the client install as part of a group policy or via SMS or similar (assuming you have a domain).

I think we really need a better idea of the environment you're working in. Is this a unix/freenix/windows/mac place? are the clients on a domain? what is the infrastructure in place today?

Windows 2k3 Domain
Current machines are joined to domain 100+ machines...
Company we're merging with is running Novell 65+ machines...they will be joined to the domain after the fact

-I'd like to be able to see what they have for hardware, software and the like.
-I'd like to be able to use this software down the road on our domain as well.

-I work for a mid to small business as you can see...and report to the CFO...I'm sure you all understand what the budget thing is like

-I could probably sqeeze a couple thousand out of them.

I run the entire network, basically I know a little about a lot and when projects come up I learn it all and forget it 6 months later  I'd like something that's easy to use so I don't have to re-educate myself down the road when I want to use it again!

Also....
I have a lot of laptop users who are pathetic about backing their documents up on the server.  I've tried redirecting their my docs, they didn't like that.  I tried syncing when they were connected, but ran into speed issues.  Any suggestions here?

You guys are GREAT!
Thanks!

Do a google on Belarc adviser.

It checks the machine, and tells you every program on the machine, as well as all the specs and stuff.

Used it myself, and my it guys use it all the time.

I have no personal experience with this software. That it sends a formatted email is nice. I'm looking for something that has, say, a webserver part and a client part. You could have everyone open a webpage, download a thingy, and upload the results.

I don't know if this exists, but it would be nice
