My current MX510 optical mouse has been with me through 3 gaming builds.  I always liked the feel of it and it has never given me any problems.

I just started playing COD5 and only play on the bolt only servers.  This means many shots are from a great distance and require accuracy.  My problem is sometimes when I move the mouse I can't get it on the pixel I want, any movement moves it too far.  No matter what in game sensitivity I have it set to, I have the same problem.  I can increase the speed but not the accuracy of the mouse.

I was under the impression the way to correct this was to get a higher DPI mouse.  That way I can set it high and get to the pixels I want instead of going past them when i move the mouse.  After setting the dpi high I was under the impression that I could set the in game sensitivity lower, which would make my cursor speed not too fast, but would let me have the accuracy I want.  My current MX510 is 800dpi.

Reading reviews on different mice on gaming forums has me confused.  Basically they say increasing the dpi just increases the speed and smoothness of the cursor, but not the accuracy.

If my understanding of the way this works is correct, I'm going to get a new mouse, probably a G9.

Essentially my question is if I have an accurate understanding of what the increase in dpi will yield me.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

I have a G7 and love it on all the CoD games in the series, I as well play mostly bolt only servers.

I would go ahead and get the G9, as Im sure its better than the G7 since its a higher number.

You've got the right idea in mind but you may need check on your Windows mouse settings to optimize it.  In Control Panel under "Mouse", click "Pointer Options" and set your pointer to the sixth tick mark.  UNCHECK "Enhance Pointer Precision".  This makes mouse movement 1:1 with your physical movement and is highly accurate.   This, along with maxing out your mouse DPI and configuring your mouse speed in-game should do the trick.  If the windows settings are already set up this way, you may just need a new mouse with a much higher max DPI (1000+).
