My computer does not like anti virus programs. I recently upgraded to Windows XP. Since then my computer has spiraled out of control with the blue screen of death. I would go a couple of weeks, having to load back-up copies of my registry and encountering fatal errors on start up. I narrowed it down to Mcaffee antivirus. Used their tech help and tried their fixes but no solutions.

I swapped to Embarq online security and everything seemed fine. But after several months my computer began to encounter errors again and eventually crashed. I had to reformat and reinstall. Now I have it up and running again but when I load the embarq security, it is already giving me one reboot when I first turn the computer on. So I removed my anti virus for now.

The only other suggestion that I found along the way was that the memory chips might not be compatible but I checked them and they appear to be correct for my motherboard.

And one thing I have not tried yet is updating my bios. I downloaded the latest bios upgrade for my motherboard but cannot find any decent instructions on actually installing them.

Any suggestions? I know, a lot of these problems are vague and hard to diagnose.

Reformat again and do not put the Embark AV crap on.  Get either Avast or AVG.

Until you format and re-install, you really won't know if you're dealing with a hardware or software issue at this point.

Don't use anti-virus and don't visit questionable websites for a few weeks and see if the bsod's still pop up.  If it still happens, you might have bad memory, hardware conflict, bad mobo etc...

I've never seen an "upgrade" from one version of Windows to another that was anything less than a total disaster.  Reformat and do a fresh install of XP, and that may help.

Edit:  I see that you reformatted, and that didn't help.  See below...

Also, take the cover off of your computer, and look at the little metal canisters sticking up off of the motherboard near the processor (capacitors).  If the tops of them are bulging or leaking some sort of fluid, then the motherboard is deceased.  I've seen this become an increasingly common cause of BSOD's in recent years... the capacitors act to "smooth out" the power flowing throughout the motherboard, and when they fail, the system has no hope of being stable.
