I've moved from Photoshop Elements to Photoshop CS4 and am having a problem with gradients.  I can't get the gradient to actually work.  When I try I get a solid color.  I never had this problem in elements.  Here's a screenshot....can anyone help me with this??  Also...on gradients with transparencies....still just one solid color!  You can see on the sample below, just red...no transition from black to red!

You're applying a gradient map. This does not do what you think it does.

To apply a gradient, use the gradient tool (should be "under" the paint bucket tool). Shift G will cycle through the paintbucket/gradient tools.

A gradient map would be what you would use to (for example) make a picture black and white.

Just so you can see what it does... open a photograph up (not a solid) and do the steps you were doing. You should see the image be black & red... not a gradient.

Thank you for straightening me out!!!   I REALLY appreciate it.  Was using photoshop elements on windows, now using CS4 on my new Mac and messed up the gradient map and gradient tool.... before I just went to the icon...but the icon wasn't on the toolbar so i did what i thought i needed to do from the menu, which was the gradient map.  I got the gradient tool added to the toolbar, so I'm all straightened out,.. Thanks a bunch.

Another question...how can you fill in a selected area with a pattern.  Again...knew how to do it in elements, but can't get it figured out in CS4.  I can do it with the paint tool, but I want to fill an entire area that has been selected.

Thank you again folks!!!

disregard... Figured it out... edit, then fill, after having selected the portion of the picture!
