I have not had a problem till the other day when I was putting the mag with Win 64gr PP ammo into the HD AR that I had just used at a training class. The mag was left at home and as I was getting ready to insert it, I saw a round just pop out of the top. I reloaded it, tapped it against my palm to seat everything back and it popped out again. I looked closely and the feed lip was cracked. This mag doesn't really get used as it holds my defense ammo.
It is a Gen 2 windowed FDE mag. This bothers me as it happened to be a mag with my HD ammo for home. Attached File |

I've had three break on the spine. I now have switched to Lancer Mags
ETA: Two got dropped fully loaded. One during a two-gun match and one in my back yard while shooting. The other I did a tactical reload and it cracked the spine about half an inch. |

I have never had a PMag crack on me, and I have a bunch that have some pretty hard use of three gun comps. I have a friend that dropped one on his driveway, it must have landed perfect on one of the feed lips, which cracked and puked out all the rounds.

Personally gave up on PMAG's. 4 with cracked spines and 1 with a feedlip that broke off.
Magpul replaced them and I sold them and my remaining PMAG's off. |

This is making me rethink my mag situation and go with aluminum or steel mags. I have a lot of PMAGs.

Not yet...seems like you would have to beat them up pretty bad to cause damage.

The colored gen 2 mags are known to be weaker and many have cracked spines/feedlips. Magpul stopped those colors, due to the durability issues experienced with them.
Magpul will replace your cracked mag but I'd suggest not using the gen 2 colored mags for primary. |

Huh, never heard of the Gen 2 colored mags being weaker, okay.
I know mags are disposable, but not one that has not really seen a lot of use. |

I've had one break (a gen 1) and have seen another 1 or 2 break. These were all hard use training mags that have seen multiple classes, training days, competitions, etc.

I cracked a few gen 1 or 2 OD green mags. Crack ran from the back top of the magazine about 1 inch. Caused rounds to pop out when hit hard from the bottom. They all still fed perfectly, just spilled a few rounds out when in a magazine pouch. Had a Gen 1 or 2 FDE mag lose a feed lip after hard use. It got tossed. All these mags were range mags subjected to very hard use / abuse. Never had an issue with the current magazines.

I just found a cracked gen 1 of mine last week. Sent it off to magpul, currently awaiting a replacement. Mine split on the left side, in the notch below the feed lips. About the 7 o’clock position. It was black. No window.

You ever seat the mag on a closed bolt? I’ve had a couple break, I’m pretty sure one is because I slammed the mag in on a closed bolt.
|
|
[#36]
I haven’t broke one yet. I’ve dropped them loaded on pavement and gravel. I should probably check the loaded stash to see if there’s any cracks since they were loaded and put away in storage in 2009.

My son's in the Army and his unit uses the Gen3 Pmags, they break feed lips all the time at the range.

[#40]
I’ve had 3-4 where 2 rounds got of got stuck evenly side-by-side at the top expanding the feed lips and the mag was nearly impossible to remove from the receiver. I couldn’t see any cracks though. Anybody have that happen?
I tossed them back in the bag with a bunch of others and now I don’t know which ones were bad. I've now gone back to GI or Lancer. |

None yet, but I have 180 NIW PMAGs for replacements if they do. My grandkids will be using these mags probably.

If you shoot long enough, leave mags loaded long enough, you will find out that reality sucks. Mags go bad, guns break, ammo misfires, you name it. What op experienced is why you buy extra mags. They are disposable items.
Best solution, check your gear periodically, and avoid low cost questionable mags. Stick with Pmag, Usgi, and maybe lancer. Even then, the - best - can still fail. I recently had to trash a new Okay mag out a few I bought recently, had weird feed issues with it so went with the cheaper option, get another one. The others in the group were ok. Spent more than the mag cost in ammo while figuring out it was the mag, not the ammo. Anyhow, that one mag did not make me decide to trash all Okay mags. |
|
[#44]
"Pmags, how often do they crack or break on you?"....
Never. Because I don't use them. All my Pmags are in boxes for "extra's", as I continue to shoot/use my "forever" mags (Lancer L5AWM's) ETA: seriously, though.. Pmags are overhyped low budget mags. What do you want out of them? Get better mags (oh, say like LANCERS) if you want them to last. |

I have a mix of Lancers (mostly), gen 3 Pmags, and USGIs (range mags). It doesn't hurt to diversify things a little. You could always sell your gen 2s in the EE and switch stock.
Eta: I used to have FDE/OD Gen 2s. Had one that had a chipped feed lip from being dropped loaded, but functioned with no issues. |
