Do the different colors of the POW/MIA bracelets have any significance?  Is black only for serviceman that were KIA?  Silver for those that are POW/MIA?  Or are the different colors just for personal preference?

I believe that was the intention, but that has changed a little.  I don't think it is improper to have a KIA in silver instead of black, but it may be inappropriate to have a black MIA/POW.  Did you have something specific in mind?

I want to get a POW bracelet for Lt. Cmdr Michael Scott Speicher (USN) who was shot down during the gulf war and is believed by many to still be alive and held captive by Iraq.

I prefer the appearance of black but do not want to break tradition or offend anyone by getting the bracelet made incorrectly.

I do not recall any colors, just silver. Back when the project started there was no difference twix the POWs and the MIAs.

When did this change (black)?

I'm not sure, but I think I remember that the Vietnam bracelets came out first and were silver. Then they came out with some Korean War braclets that were black, and WWII that were red.

I'm probably wrong, but I think I remember it being something like that. Also that was over 10 years ago, things could have changed.

There is no difference between the POWs and the MIAs.  I think black is for KIAs.
