Let's just say, somebody, by accident, may or may not have hit "delete" on a PlayStation2 memory card... is there any way to recover the data??

Nope.... at least not from the system itself... maybe if theres some way to plug it into your computer or sumthin, but i'm pretty sure u r screwed....
So what did you lose? your high score on vice city or what?

worse.... every game ever played on the PS2.... over the last two years!!!

Just wait for PS3 (comes out next month) - it uses memory stick and (I think) SD cards for saving game data. You can play PS2 games on it, download game saves from the internet onto your card, put the card in the PS3 and then you have perfect saves...
