I did not know a P-51 elevator could defy the laws of physics.  Pretty special. 

Of is it only the French P-51s that work that way?

Huh, I see what you are saying, you might be right.  IIRC the P-51 requires the stick to be pushed forward to unlock the tailwheel for taxi, so elevator is always down.

I'm bettin that pilot doesn't know nor gives a hoot where his elevator is positioned. He's focusing on taxiing.

The elevator/stick position determines whether the tailwheel steering is engaged or disengaged.

If he is taxiing with the wind, then the elevator is in the correct position.

The stick is right between his legs and his hand is on it. He knows exactly where the elevator is positioned.
