Hi All,
I am going to need to do some painting inside my house. I have those spray on "pop corn" textured ceilings. Last time I painted, I used a roller w/ a big "nappy" head for textured surfaces. It did a pretty good job, except a few section of the "pop corn" pulled down and I had to repair that. Of course the texture pattern was not an exact match. Fast forward to today. I was thinking of using a paint sprayer to do the ceiling, so I wouldn't pull off the texture w/ the roller. I have pretty much ruled out those hand held "wagner" types. Any ideas for a reasonably priced sprayer that will do what I am looking to do? Or is it just better to use a roller and make any repair as necessary? Thanks, FB |

This is a good one for entry level and getting a decent paintjob: Graco
This is the one I have, but I use it professionally. You don't need to go this fancy:

Popcorn ceilings really date a house and are a big negative for resale. They are very easy to scrape by just spraying with an insect sprayer filled with water and then hit it with a drywall knife. Then you can re-texture with a trowel or texture sprayer and then use a normal roller to paint.
I stripped every ceiling in my house. Water keeps down the dust. |

Thanks for the replies so far. The house was built about 23-25 years ago, so I should be fine w/ asbestos. NO plans on selling in the near future, so resale is not a current issue. Scraping off the texture is more of a job then I want to get into right now. That Graco sprayer looks similar to a Titan model that the local Lowe's had. I think it was model xt250, but I am not 100% sure. Price was about $250. The nice (cute) 20ish yo girl wasn't much help when I was in there last. Thanks again, FB |
| It is really not that big of job to scrape. It is just as big a hassle to use a paint sprayer inside your house. By retexture, I do not mean popcorn, I mean knockdown texture. You really should consider this. Resale or not, anybody that comes inside your house will frown on the popcorn, whether they mention it or not................... |

Why did you rule out the Wagner sprayer? i used one for exactly that purpose and it worked very well. Get the flexible extension which allows you to hold the sprayer level while pointing the nozzle directly upward. |

Mike:
Well I guess I never knew that flexible extension existed. Anyhow, I bought another brand of sprayer. Lowe's had a Titan XT290 w/ a mis-marked price tag for $260 (regular $400). Yes, they noticed it before I bought it, and yes they sold it to me for the "wrong" price w/o issue. They did correct the error right away, so no more deals for the next guy. Way more sprayer then I need for this job, but I'll use it when I re-do the outside of the house too. Wild: I understand what you are saying about "pop corn", but honestly to me, texture is texture. Like I said, if the pop corn texture comes off, more texture of any type is not going back on. Just plain ole paint on a flat surface. I have never removed pop corn texture, but I assume it is used to cut down cost, and I would have a lot of prep work to do the the ceiling before I paint it. Thanks for the help guys, FB |
