Do most of you LEO guys consider this a law enforcement position or more like a social worker position. Any personal or off hand experience in the field would be appreciated i.e. what duties does the job entail, biggest hassle or problem with the job, average work day, carry/no carry of firearm, etc. Thanks

Our Parole guys are pretty hard assed and like to join us in the mix.

We had State Parole on our Task Force.  They performed all of the LEO duties.  They do have a compliance component to their job description which requires them to monitor the parolee and try and get them into programs that will aid them in not re-offending.  They also have PAL (Parolee At Large) teams that track down absconders and violators.  In California they have Peace Officer powers and are authorized to carry firearms.  They wear a couple of hats.  Police Officer, Social Worker, Counselor, Paper Pusher, Investigator, Court Officer, just to name a few.

They have a lot more power in investigating a parolee that regular cops do.  In Southern California, there are thousands and thousands of parolees in the area so having a Parole Agent on the TF was a blessing.

They deal with the hard core guys on a daily basis.  Definitely a L.E. position.

I've heard from a parole officer that you pretty much deal with shitbags 100% of the time.

That the police occasionally get to interact with "normal" people in their duties. But parole officers deal with the worst day in and day out.

Any truth to that?

Ours too and they typically have ALOT more leeway getting into a house. We had a guy once that we needed on a case we were working. He was on Parole so we took his PO with us at 0300. PO saw the guy through the window and knocked on the door, guy said F.O. PO broke the window and drug him out. LMAO that was classic.

I definately consider them brothers in LE.

Here Probation/Parole Officers are LEO.

My job is the weirdest in Law Enforcement it's a combination of  Parole Officer, Police Officer, Corrections Officer, and Investigator.
