In one pic posted in an earlier thread, I noticed somthing odd. I posted it here for reference as well. The soldier I annotated is wearing an 11th ACR combat patch. The reasons I find that odd are that 1. Last time 11th ACR was in combat was in Vietnam 2. 11th ACR was stood down while I was in....'1995ish, IIRC, then, re-flagged stateside. 3. They are the OPFOR at Ft. Irwin, and, I thought, non-deployable. What's the deal with this? I've been out a while, but, I still try to keep abreast of unit movments and things, and, this one's a stumper. The only thing I can think of is that the soldier is on a second tour, and, was assigned to 11th ACR, and, attatched to another unit, then, given the option of wearing the 11th ACR patch on his right shoulder instead of the unit he was attatched to. A few of my friends from 8th ID that were assigned to one of the armored divisions in the first Gulf War did this,a nd, wore the 8th ID patch instead of the unit that they were assigned to for the fighting. Any ideas?

I thought 11th ACR (and 2d ACR at Polk) are supposed to be deployable units, and some of 11th's elements got deployed to Iraq and OPFOR at Irwin was backfilled by Guard units, but I could be wrong. For what it is worth, I also know of at least a few Vietnam-era vets (including one with a Blackhorse combat patch) who are still in the Guard. |
I didn't the think the OPFOR at Polk was drawn from 2nd ACR. I thought they were a separate unit. They the 50(?), an airborne unit. I know 2 ACR is deployable. They've been all over the place since being assigned to Polk. The Gaurd backfilling Irwin makes sense. Yes, I know re; Viet vets in the gaurd....WE had one in my gaurd unit, but, I had dismissed that option since this soldier was from 1-9 Cav, and, obviously too young to have been in VN. |

i seem to remember one of my drills haveing a 11th acr patch combat patch while i was in basic, and theres no way he could have been in nam, were'nt they in germany during desert storm? some may have been booted down with other units or something, i`ll ask around at work tommorow. |

LOL! Like every other "official" Army website, that site is way out of date. Looks like that last newsletter from the PAO is for June! WTF? Why can't my beloved Army learn to be as tirelessly self-promoting as the U.S.M.C? Why can't our PAO's pull their heads out of their asses. I assure you that the 11th ACR was deployed to Iraq.
