I am looking for a belt sander and don't want the cheaply made Black and Decker pecker wreckers. I also don't want to spend a couple hundred bucks.  What kind of luck have people had at pawn shops? Do you test it there?

Porter Cable 3x21's have been around for decades, you should be able to pick one up for less than $80.  Best new price online is $140.

If you can't plug it in and see that it's working at a pawn shop, use the door.

My only purchase at pawn shops was a one time purchase of four tools.  They probably had a new price of $1000 total. I paid $150. They gave me the option of buying a guarantee.  It was very cheap and it gave you peace of mind in case you used them a day and took a shit.  IIRC the options were 30,60,90 days.

They did say they test all tools that come in but take that with a grain of salt. Your shop may have more reliable workers than mine did though.
