It is a collison between Antique Roadshow and Waffle House.

I watched the first season, which was just a few weeks ago... ...but I tend to think the majority of the "unique" stuff people bring in there is staged. Who thinks to take a top of the line speed boat to a pawn shop in Las Vegas? Or a Civil War uniform. etc etc... Just seems rigged. I guess they wouldn't have a show by just showing them buying stolen rings, watches and tools.

Quoted: those guys are assholes If you think those guys are assholes stay out of all pawn shops. People bring in their crap all the time they want to get rid of and they want to get what originally paid for it when it was new. A pawn shop is a place to get money quick, not to get paid top dollar for you shit. |
| I enjoy the show, but I can about guarantee those guys would not spend nearly as much time fucking around if they weren't being paid to do the tv show. Of course I could say the same thing about American Chopper. You rarely see any real work being done in either establishment... |

Craigs list people.....ebay people.....hint... |

Typical interchange: Customer brings in some random thing: "I want to unload this." PS: "Pawn or sell?" C: "Uhhhhhh.." PS explains the difference. C: "Sell." <My shocked face: >PS: "I've never seen one of those. How much do you want for it?" C: "I have no idea." <Again: >PS: "Well I have a friend who's an expert. I'll bring him in." PS gets expert in. Expert says it's worth $556. C: "I want $556 for it." PS's turn: "I'll give you $100. Now. Cash."C: "But, it's worth $556!!! PS: "Not to me." The random item that minutes before was devoid of any fixed value to the seller is now worth a finite amount. That's the way a meth-head's mind works, I guess. |

My father in law lives in Vegas and sells lots of stuff on craigslist. He got a call from a producer on that show about an old obscure item he had listed in CL. They asked him if he wanted to be on the show and come in and try to sell it. |

I generally hate reality TV. I complain that Discovery and History no longer have any decent programming. I make fun of my wife for watching stupid reality TV shows.
However, I can't stop watching Pawn Stars. I am ashamed. Yeah, they are fat assholes and all, but I just HAVE to find out if the stuff is real and what it's theoretically worth. |

I wonder how they find this stuff. It's not like a guy just happens to walk in with a jet ejection seat when the camera guy is hanging around. |

If you check the Pawn Stars webpage there is a link wanting people to sign up to appear on the show with whatever unique items they have to sell. Other than that the show is how a pawn shop operates, the customer in most cases is hurting for money and the store can low ball the hell outta them. The "pay day loans" or "check into cash" outfits are just a advanced form of the pawn shop. They prey on the people who can't manage money.
Selling an item at a pawn shop and taking a loss is normal, sort of a tax on those who are to dumb to manage money... |
