First time ever using one. I am taking care of a friends house and know nothing about them, can't find a manual etc..

My question is, do they normally let off a stron smoke smell into the house? I didn't know if I needed to adjust the flute or what, but to me, it just smells smoky. That may be how it normally is, like I said, never used one and don't know???

Should not smell smoky. The pipe is leaking.

Yeah they don't really smell at all something is wrong. Hearth.com forums are a good resource

Is this something that lets of carbon monoxide. I'd really not care to wind up dead in my sleep.

Dude, use your head! If you are smelling a heavy smoke smell it isn't safe to use it.

I believe so. I'm thinking it is the seams on the piping behind it. I was going to wait until its dark and try the flashlight thing..
